I have a Minn Kota 40 AT with the same problem. Never had it looked at so I don't know what caused the problem. I would like to know how to fix it also.

I have a Minnkota trolling motor and this weekend at Patoka my directional indication arrow quit moving or at least it is off from what it's supposed to be.Haven't looked at it yet but was wondering if anyone knew what the problem was or how to fix it?

If its similar to my motorguide, in that the direction arrow is turned by a small gear off the flat gear that drives the main shaft held there by spring tension, with an impact the motor head may turn but the direction arrow gear doesn't. motorguide can be depressed and turned manually to realign without dissassembly. you may just have to open it up and see. its probably not complicated at all. open your equipment and get familiar with it if you are the comfortable with tools, it will pay off in future doing repairs yourself. Good Luck.
I opened it up and it was just out of mess it only had 4 positions it can be set it unless the teeth on the gear skip. So just by taking the head off and reseating it was the ticket! Also found that the led light was wired the wrong polarity so I flopped the wires and it worked so got two birds with one stone thanks everyone.
