check to see if it has a rating plate, the weight of the motor would be a great factor.if it is just a flat bottom john boat tiller steer i'd say a 35 would be more than enough, you wouldn't have much control of a flat bottom with a 75 i'd say.

I bought a John Boat; 14' x 5'. I may have to replace 6 HP motor. What is the largest motor that a boat like could handle?
I am looking for motor up to 75 HP.
Let me know if that would be too large for this boat?

I had a 25hp tiller on a 14ft Alumnacraft jon boat and it got us where we wanted to go rather quickly ..... think it was also maxed out on HP but like CTFSHWHISKER said, check the plate if you got one.....no plate, call the dealer or manufacturer who has 'em and check for sure..... don't want to overpower and end up in the H2O :-) tight lines.......
You don't need anything larger than 25 hp. I,m pretty sure any thing larger would be dangerous and probably illegal. I have a 16 foot Tracker with a 25 hp, you could get a 40 hp, but I think that was the limit on hp.
I've got a 1966 14hp Sears made by Scott McCulloch for sale. It would probably work pretty good.
$300.00........

I doubt if that jon boat is rated for over 20 hp
