I enjoy bass fishing and have caught several nice large and small mouth but never landed a “trophy” trout. I’ve been fishing the tail waters here in TN that hold rainbow and brown trout for over a decade and caught some really nice 2-3 lb fish. I know both from seeing them under the boat and in pictures at tackle shops that much larger fish exist in the waters I have been fishing. As it turns out, the bigger fish feed differently than the smaller ones and you have to fish accordingly if you expect to catch one.
I’ve been making a conscious effort to do just that over the past 3-4 years with no luck. Finally the other day I made the right cast and was lucky enough to keep this chunk on the line long enough to squeeze him into a trout net (these are not made for fish of this size by the way). Caught him on 6 lb test and an ultralight rod and reel.
As you can see, I was ecstatic! I’ve been fishing a long time in search of a big old hook mouthed brown trout like this one… and it was worth every minute.
