Where around Cumberland can you buy shiners or shad?

On the dam end, Lake Country Outdoors on the right on US 127 in Russell Springs is one place, then there is a BP in Jamestown on the left.

Are there any places around Somerset or Conley Bottom to get bait? I am trying to avoid driving to the lower end.

Thanks. I figured they would have shiners or something. I keep hearing that they are extremely hard to keep alive. Would I be wasting my money to buy some and just keep them in my livewell? Will they survive in there for a day?

    MJ:
Shad are hard to keep alive as they get stressed easily and die.

But Shiners should last you a while

Just make sure to keep the water cool and aerated and don't put more than 4 dozen minnow in less than 5 gallons of water if the water is warm. Colder water will hold more oxygen and will also slow the metabolism of the minnows down. This means less Ammonia in the water from the fish's excretions. Chemcial reactions inside living organism's slows way down in colder water.

Some State's allow people to use cast nets to catch their own bait. Find out the regulations for the states you are fishing and see if you can use a throw net to catch your own threadfin shad to fish with. That way you won't have to buy them and you can always catch more if they die. But check the regulations and obey them first.

Thanks for the info. As far as the throw net, I wouldn't have the first clue on catching bait with one. Heck, I have a boat full of tackle and have a hard time catching 1 fish!!!

Based upon my experience, I would not count on it. Better to call in advance....during cold weather, they will not HAVE THEM!! Better plan on buying shiners.

    Good Fishing,

They usually always have a good supply of shiners at Cumberland Outdoors on Hwy 90 before you get to Conley Bottom and they are easy to keep alive especially during cool weather. They aren't nearly as good of bait as live alwives or gizzard shad though. If this is your first visit, you may wish to ask Greg at Cumberland Outdoors to suggest a good guide.
