What I thought was going to be a tough day weather wise turned out to be a beautiful morning. Temp was in the mid 40's with just a little wind and the birds did not disappoint as I heard several birds, some close and some far away. I setup and made one call after fly down and Mr. Tom hammered out the logging road. In just a minute or two there he was about 25 yards but I could not get a good shot because of too many trees in the way. I clucked a few times but he eventually walked off. DANG! The next time I hear him he is beating feet back to some huzzies coming up the draw below us. They get together and start heading for the cow pasture. I do the ole end-around and beat them to the spot. I setup and make one series of calls then ole Mr. Longbeard comes strutting over the pond dam bank and begins to strut on the pond dam (beautiful spot). I let him strut a few times before the blue smoke bellowed from the ole smoke pole. 21lbs, 11" beard and 1" spurs. A perfect way to start the season!
