    Rod building

I have a crazy idea of building a fishing rod, never done this. I checked out mudhole, and see they sell kits, they have G Loomis kits. If you buy a G Loomis rod kit lets say at 125.00 how much would the rod cost at the store.

Bob it depends on a lot of different things. What type of handle, reel seat, and the guides. You can spend as much on the guides as you can on a Loomis blank. Once you have all the equipment you can save some money. Ebay is a good place to get the rod dryer.

But the big reason is it is an awesome feeling to catch a fish on a rod or bait that you have made.

If you need any help give me a call 502-664-5921. Ryan

    Re: Rod building

I have a couple of fly rods that I put together myself, and it was pretty enjoyable doing it. And it's cool knowing that I built them when I'm catching fish.
I've been thinking about building myself a heavy casting rod for stripers and cats, but so far, I haven't found any good deals on blanks. I'm checking on Ebay for 'em now.

Check out the Rainshadow/Batson SWS series. I have built rods on the SWS70L, SWS70M, SWS70HM, and SWS597 blanks. The last one is 7'10", the rest are 7 foot. The SWS70M is my main rod for throwing plugs to Stripers on Cumberland. The SWS597 is a heavier blank that I've used to throw larger plugs to stripers and bluefish in the ocean. Will also use it to throw larger plugs if I get down to the Cumberland River. Good blanks and not that expensive.

I've seen some of the Rainshadow blanks, but don't remember seeing any longer ones. Where did you get your blanks?

I'm thinking Cabelas, though I just checked their latest Tackle Craft Catalog and they only list the SWS595 and SWS70L.

    Exclamation Re: Rod building

    Bob,
We need to meet. I build my own customrods at home. I could show you how, what to buy, where to buy, etc. Right now I am building 2 custom dropshot/shakyhead rods, 7' split grip spinning. I got a great deal on the blanks, $15 each, they are lamiglass IM7 graphite. They are going to make a great rod. They have some backbone to them and a soft light tip. Can't wait to try them out. I will have about $40 in the rods when I get them done. Plus, we can hook up and go fishing some time.

Mudhole in Orlando, when I was down there last spring, I visited their store. I got a
