According to the manual, timing on those engines needs to be done either with the engine in the water or with a test wheel installed. I'd take the thing to a dealer who has the test wheel or a test tank to submerge the motor in. It shouldn't cost that much to have the timing set, and i'd have them synchronize the throttle linkage while they were at it. It doesn't take much (a turn of a screw here or there) to get the timing off and while the engine will still run it won't run near as well as it should.

thanks alot guys, yell i need to take it and get it done right. The thing through a rod last fall and i found aand old engine that had a good crank and block. I over haul the thing and being Ill never worked on boat motor I'll not for sure how to time it.I'll worked on car, tractor, bulldozer, motorcycle, but this thing is a differant animal. It sounds good but i was told if the timing to fast it could burn a piston.Don't need that with fishing season on us.

Re: i may be out of time

The timing may be out, but if you disconnected the carb linkages, the carbs might be out of sync a hair. I know on bigger Johnsons, the syncing is very crucial. The motor will sound like it's a timing issue. It'll miss and pop. You could singe the reeds by not linking the carbs just right. I hope you find your problem.
