Herrington tailwaters

I want to fish in the tail waters and I am curious how much land if any is public? Any info on what the trout are doing would also be much appreciated.

Only way to access the the area below the dam is via the KY River. That's the only way to reach the trout. There is a boat ramp at the bottom of the hill just before you get to Lock 7. The ramp is not that great, but is ok. If the KY is down, be careful because trailer might drop off the ramp. A four wheel drive truck is the preferred on that ramp. There are lots of canoes put in there though. From the ramp to the mouth of Dix River is about a mile or so. Dix River is a nice place to go on a hot afternoon. Remember, only artificial bait from the dam to a point two miles downstream. There is a sign posted. Good luck and be careful. Big rocks, sometimes the big current, and the cold water = big trouble.

Thank you sir. Long shot in the dark here but, if anyone who reads this owns any of that wonderful land the stream there runs through a certain guy who loves to fish and still has a strong young back would be very interested to hear from you. I can do all kinds of general carpentry work and am more than eager to work.

Friend of mine went there last Saturday. Said the river was very high and access to the Dix River (Herrington tailwaters) was near impossible.

There is a set of rapids you need to navigate to get to the dam where the best fishing is, he said this was raging and totally impassible.

Also the KY is high and muddy. He caught one fish and the guy is an expert.

If you go, wait till we all dry out a little. my two cents

Can you paddle a canoe or kayak up these rapids under "normal" river conditions? I have never been but thought that might be an interesting adventure one time.

There's a fairly steep bank made of rip-rap along one side of the rapids. When KU isn't running water you can drag a small boat up through there but better just to carry it along the rip-rap.
