    Re: lake lemon bowfin?

If you throw very many crankbaits on Lemon your gonna catch 'em! I can't think of very many days that I haven't caught one when I was primarily throwing cranks or spinnerbaits. They'll sure get your heartrate up when your in a tournament and one wacks a crankbait.

To answer your question- There's more Bowfin in Lemon than any other lake I've fished. I've caught more out of Lemon than I've EVER caught out of the rivers.

I catch them all the time in the spring crappie fishing with minnows. They are very mean and ugly fish. I have heard people say, that once you get them in the boat they have been known to try to bite you.

I think that the state record for a bowfin is roughly 18 pounds, but I am convinced that is because they are so mean and nasty that no one wants to mess with them.
Several years ago a buddy of mine caught one out of lemon that stretched across the hood of his car. It was probably close to 30 pounds. I have seen lots of them down in the spillway and creek below lemon that would easily eclipse the 18 pound number. What is really nasty is to go down to the spillway about the end of July when no water has been flowing, the water is all stagnant, and all of the fish in the spillway are dead from lack of oxygen.... that is except for all the bowfin that come up and breath the air.

Caught a 7 or 8 pound bowfin on a frog through some milfoil mats on Patoka. What a battle! Swore I had the state record bass on until I got that ugly sucker to the side of the boat!

Lemon is loaded with them in the upper end. May start a USA bowfin club.

I had a big bowfin at lemon tear the back treble off a crankbait. Nasty fish, but fun to catch.
