Take it from me, get a lowrance 520c, by far for the money is the best you can get and you can find them for a decent price that wont break the bank!!! I read a report that puts the 520 in the upper class for the money

Would it be a waste of money to try and find a decent depth finder for around $300? If so do u guys know any? Or would u reccomend i keep saving? Thanks

cabelas has the 510c which is the 520 without GPS being cleared out now for $330. I ordered one and only time will tell how it performs.
Agreed, LOVE mine (and IIRC Dave Stewart also runs one himself which IMO speaks volumes)

Which ever brand you choose, IMO lowrance is a product I would stand behind.
If you already have one that works I would save up. They are plummeting in price and humming bird has prefected the programming. They bought the rights from NASA and everyone is trying to copy it. The patent runs out this year and prices will really drop. Side by side imaging is the deal. I am going with out this year in hopes they are under 500 by xmas
well tell you the truth,,,,eagle has that 480 elite with gps for under 300 or right around,,,not a bad unit,,,,
