do not know why, wonderd this myself, maybe has to do with depth needed to pump water out for taylorsville,if they do.or maybe just a minimum needed in the lake.i'd like to see them lower it a few more feet to wash out some of the creeks.i also wonder if it may make some better spwning areas if they would?

I think its because its not that deep and if they did the marina would be on the bottom just like green.Just my thought Terry Adolph

    Russ,

I think it has to do with teh fact that Taylorsville lakes surrounding area simply does not have as many creeks or tributaries flowing into the creek, and the land around the lake is not such that the corps has to lower the lake to make room for heavy spring rains. But, I did send an email to the Corps, and asked them. When they answer me, I'll post it here for you.

They do not "pump" water out, they open a gate and gravity takes over.
The water they let out only has to do with FLOOD CONTROL, nothing else.
The design of the lake and how much water it can contain at
high water conditions is their only concerne.
That lake doesn't have to hold back as much water as the other lakes
so they don't have to lower it as much to meet their volume.

Taylorsville is not a "shallow" lake, it's 80 ft deep at the dam.
Some of the Marina is in over 40' of water.
With it's high spillway and steep banks, Taylorsville lake can hold back
a lot of water for the little Salt River.
That's all it's there to do. everything else is just a bonus for us.
The Army Corp of Eng. couldn't care less about the marina or the boating
    by the private sector.
They're strictly there for flood control.

i know they don't pump it out for the flood control, wasn't sure if they pump water out for part of the surrounding counties water supply{intake depths}.flood control or electric power is all any of the lakes were built for.the recreation is just a sidepot of money for the state.it holds back alot more water than you think, lot of square miles drain into the salt river basin, watch how mutch it stays in the parking lots when the spring rains come in.i havn't seen any bonus except for shepherdsville not flooding as much.it has all but killed the fishing in the rivers and creeks here because the water stays so low in them now, even as wet as it has been.we used to get good crappie and whites and catfish here in the beech fork and rolling fork, now it isn't worth the time..with that,i'd like to see them drain it..alltogether

    Ky State folks answered me:Bob,

This is the correct office; I'm sorry for the delay in responding to your
question. You are correct in that the lake levels are dropped during the
winter to create more room for flood storage with the winter/early spring rains. You are also correct in that the amount each lake is dropped depends on the anticipated need for extra storage, which is less at Taylorsville than at other lakes that have a lower winter pool.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.
