I bought a Lowrance HDS5 in June and haven't had a minutes problem.. This is by far my favorite unit I have ever owned, if you get one make sure you get the lake insight on it.
Lowrance "had" seal issues ... changed seal mfg !!
HB had GPS refresh rate issues ... newer units supposed to have this issue addressed.
Just make sure you understand, fresh out of the gate, what you want the unit to do .. and what accessories you will need to purchase, to be able to do what's needed.
You might also want to browse thru these posts, as we do have members that are reps for HB ... and have addressed some of the issues brought up by our members :

I to have had a lot of trouble trying to decide hummingbird or lowrance. i have never owned a lowrance product. i have owned hummingbird and liked them. but the reviews on fishing forum is mixed, some good and bad about both. so i did order myself one of the lowrance hds units. thought i might get it yesterday, but looks like it may be monday or tuesday. i'm looking foward to getting it. hope i can learn to use it before spring. wander what dale and cumberland maps will look like on it.
I own 2 Lowrance's and the humminbird 997C and i love it, i cant live without side scan now. The only thing i have against Lowrance is the side scan and down scan will cost you about $600.00 extra after you buy the unit for the ad on, And humminbird is coming out with the down scan in Jan and it will be free as a down loadable update
I have a Humminbird 997. This sonar is really user friendly. The side scan is unbelievable. Go to Humminbirds website (www.humminbird.com) and watch some of the videos on the capabilities of their units. It will blow you away. That is what made up my mind. On the top of their home page you will see the menu "on the water" click on it and go to videos.
