    Wheeler ????

Would anyone be willing to share any tips for catching smallmouth on Wheeler near Decatur. I'm going to be heading down there on the weekend of Dec. 19th. I'm certainly not looking for spots but what kind of structure and bait. I would guess a jig. I've only fished Wheeler once in my life and that was down towards the dam. That end looked more like what I'm used to seeing in southern Kentucky.

    Thanks,
    Mike

Wheeler isn't known for smallmouth but there are some in there. If you are die hard looking for them, I would suggest hitting Wilson if possible. Wheeler was high and muddy sunday but i'm sure it will be back down by the weekend. i fished up in the river sunday and the water was 46-48 degrees. like you said, jigs and shaky head are good bet. upper end is like fishing river conditions while the lower end is more like you are probably accustomed to in ky. if wilson is an option, the entire lake will be more like what you're used to.

while reading this post, i remembered something my brother-in-law told me. and sounds like you may be the man to ask about it. he told me this guy told him their was a lake in alabama, and he couldn't remember the name of the lake. but they fished below the dam in the river, and it had lots of stripers and their was no limit on them. would you have an idea what lake he may be speaking of. or all the alabama lakes like that. thanks in advance, and merry christmas.
