Small Silver Carp vs Gizzard Shad

I have heard that Small Silver Carp can be mistaken for Gizzard Shad. If somebody mistakenly took a net full of Silver Carp from say the Ohio River to go Striper Fishing at Cumberland that could change the lake as we know it. Remember how the Alewives suddenly appeared--they are not a problem but these things are a big problem. It would impact fishermen, water skiers, jet skiers and general boating. Watch this video and do a google search for more videos. These things are really odd and you don't want to be around a bunch of them jumping.

Is it legal to take bait from the Ohio and use it in a lake?
With the silver carp factor, should it be legal?

Like any live bait you do not want to release any into the water. Fish and Wildlife suggests disposing of unsued bait (minnows of any variety) on land. I would guess the best answer is to be careful with any live bait, don't release any live ones in the water and any leftovers need to be disposed of on land.

Many lakes have shad restrictions now. Beaver lake in Anderson co. has a no shad rule. Fine for each shad in possesion on the lake is ^^$$$. Multiply that by a bucket full of shad and you have a second mortgage.

The big head and silver carps were first used in aquaculture ponds to control algae and plants. They first escaped from Arkansas I believe. Believe it or not, but snakheads were also a major farm fish in the state of Arkansas until the '04 federal ban.

Cedar Creek has a no live bait in possession restriction as well. I was taught at an early age to dispose of minnows and shiners on land -- not only for the potential of being non-native, but for disease control and water quality as well.

Those asian carp did wonders for the fish farmers, cleaned up the [ponds just like they were supposed to. What most of us never stop to think about, is for every problem we solve, many times the solution turns into another problem. Like importing those lady bugs, that had no predators, they just made life unbearable for many of us, no matter what you did, they found a way in. Its a smaller world today, beneficial bugs thetre are pests here, same with fauna.Did the nutrina have anything to do with the dikes in louisiana not holding?
