I caught 6 crappie two weeks ago at Cedar in the 11 to 13 inch size. My question to all you is...What did they have in their stomachs? I will let everyone who thinks they know respond, and then I will post the answer.
DD22??
algea
My jig or minnow????
Walleye Fry?
Rowdy
small bluegill???
Craws...
human fingers?
I'm with Jabbo, I'm guessing crawfish.
Thanks guys for your shot at what a 12" crappie would eat. After reading the post about the blue cat that had eaten the algae, you might think they were eating it too but not the case. They say there is no shad in Cedar, so shad is out. Cedar does have crawfish and I have seen some DD22's hanging around, but still those did not register for the answer. All six of the crappie had 2.5 inch bluegill in their stomachs. What is interesting last spring I found a 4 lb bass on the surface almost dead with a 10 inch crappie stuck in his mouth. So I guess what we can take from this is the fact that fish can eat much larger prey than we think sometimes. Thanks for posting. sglass your "The "Man."
Actually ... there ARE Shad in Cedar Creek Lake (unless they ALL died from the frigid Winter we just had) !!! They weren't 'supposed' to be in the lake, but showed up shortly after the lake opened. Jury is still out as to whether or not they were 'planted', or if the KDFWR poisoning didn't kill "all" of them. The whole idea of having just the "original" five species of fish in CCL ... was so that the larger fish of each specie would feed on the fry/young of the others, and keep the balance.
My vote, on whether or not the poisoning killed out all of the shad, is "NO". My reasoning is that there are several other species of Sunfish in the lake, other than the Bluegill & Shellcracker (which were stocked along with the Black Crappie, LMB, & Channel Cats). This would leave room for some of the Shad, already present in the creek, to have survived the poison, as well. Just MHO, though ... for what that's worth !!
... pappy
Definitely shad in Cedar..........
