I've seen rats get pummeled by northerns in WI. I used to musky/nothern fish with my grandpa and throw rat shaped baits that were deadly at dusk.

We went out from 5-9pm. We caught a few mostly around 2 to 2.5 pounds nothing real big. Everything on worms and Carolina rigs. Water is still pretty warm 86+ in a lot of places. Almost all were caught in at least 12' of water and the biggest at 2-14 in 20'+ fishing the old road with a Carolina rig. One funny story though right before dark. We saw a lot of muskrats swimming around. We started laughing about the Glendale tournament where a guy caught a very nice fish with a muskrat in his mouth. We saw one swimming across the main part of the H. Heath's in the back of the boat and says hey wouldn't it be funny if something ate it. I turn around and say yeah right. I got about half way through saying right and hear a HUGE splash. I turn back around and the rat is gone with a huge swirl where it was swimming. I said no way.... It had to just get spooked and go under. Heath ran up to the front deck where I was standing. We both stood there for about 5 minutes looking for the rat. We never saw it again. No idea if it got ate by a fish cause we never saw what caused the splash.
