    Brown Trout Spawn_KDFWR

Thought I would share the following emails with the board :

Subject: Brown Trout_Spawn Cycle in the Cumberland River?

Do Brown Trout go through spawn cycle in the Cumberland River (Wolf Creek Dam Tail Waters) and if so, does it occur in the typical "late Sept - early Nov" time frame?
    Thanks for considering my question.

    From KDFWR
    Mr. Boone,
Yes, your assumptions are correct. Brown trout do attempt to spawn in the Cumberland tailwater during the fall. However, we have seen very little evidence over the years of any successful spawning. We believe that the daily flow fluctuations due to power generation in typical years either disturb the redds or leave them high and dry. We thought that there may be some successful spawning in recent years during the dam rehabilitation due to the altered flows but still have not been able to document any successful reproduction.

    Thanks for your interest!

    Boone-
I can verify that information....I have caughten hundreds of spawning browns in the CR tributaries over the years....Including several big females over 25" busting at the seams with eggs. For that matter, the bows also spawn up the tributaries. I start fishing the browns around mid October, and the bows around mid November. The bow strain in the CR is the steelhead strain, so they spawn in the fall as well. Used to be they would stack up in the tributaries so thick that you could walk across their backs to the other side, lol! A lot less fish nowdays. Hit me up this fall and I'll take you to my secret places .

You need one regardless on the Cumberland. Anywhere else you only need one if you are keeping fish.

You can get bank access anywhere around the ramp areas. Of course, the dam area has the most bank access. An 18 ft bass boat would be fine, depending on the flow. With low flow....you wouldn't be able to. Be careful, the CR can be dangerous, especially around the dam.
