Hey All got a question .I got a crack on the fin on the lower unit on my 40 hp Johnson. When I put new lower unit lube in it Friday I seen it was leaking
Its from hitting it on the ramp at New Albany in the lower water .
Should I try JB Weld or Devcon ,or do you all think this could be welded by a welding shop?
Thanks in advance

the devcon with titanium is the best to use but it is high dollar.the best is to weld it though. In this cold weather you should make sure you dont have any water in the lowerunit or it will freeze and crack worse..
Sorry to hear the bad news. As stated above, pull out the plugs on your LU to allow any water to get out of there.
The good news, it's too darn cold to go fishing now anyway and this will give you some to time to get it repaired.
Yeah I got all the water out thanks for the reply ...I will try the Devcon ...I am not sure if my lower unit has metal that you can weld ...it may be pot metal ..not sure it's a 1974 Johnson
had the same problem 20 years ago. if it is a hairline crack you can use jb if it has any separation issues you need to have it welded and grinded. hard to say. take it to a good shop and have them decide which course to take. when i used jb is lasted for years till i sold the boat and it was still good as new.
Thanks Barkley !!!!!!!
may want to research this for your application but..... I have some of these and I got them off ebay, and I can attest they work as advertised I even did the soda can as they did and filled a dime size hole but I do recommend practicing a bit.

Heat can make cast aluminum very brittle and you would need to remove the lower unit and strip it down so you dont melt any seals or plastic pieces. Looks like some good stuff though..may want to research this for your application but.....
