Right outside my garage door when I got home was a swarm of these flying critters. In January? Anyone know what this is? Looks like a common fly of some kind.

That kind of looks like what I had seen way to many of around here last summer....swarms and swarms of these little rascals...so much so that it made it so you really didn't want to be outside.
Looks like a May Fly to me. Supposedly its a sign of a good clean body of water (I assume you live near some body of water) we usually only get them in the summertime here in the Louisville area along the Ohio. Sometimes they visit 5-10 times a year sometimes just once. Never seen one in the colder months. Up north I have heard reports of the swarms being large enough to pick up on weather radars.
Just my opinion I could be wrong.
It does look a bit like a May fly, but I think it might be smaller. And I'm no where near water. I'm in the middle of a subdivision :\
looks something like a stone fly they live near streams some flies are tied to resemble them and attract trout they appear on winter days
It's not a mayfly.
There are hundreds of species of may fly but I am about 99% sure this isn't one. I would say Caddis Fly but the legs look to long. How big was it? It could be a midge.
looks like a waterstrider...google it!
