We need volunteers to show up at the hatchery at 9 am est for about a 5-6 hr work session to clip 12,000 brook trout and 42,000 rainbows.

Breakfast and lunch provided. Call Sandy Broughman at (859)271-1778.

Wear waders and rain gear you will need to be disinfected to enter the hatchery.

For for you and the fish!

Read on for more info about fin clipping....

Dear Trout Club contacts,

We skipped a year in 2010, but we are back to trout fin clipping in 2011... 2 fin clipping efforts in fact!

Once again I would like to solicit for volunteers from the trout club membership around the state to help with these fin clipping efforts. I am particularly excited about these two stockings of trout because these will be firsts for the Cumberland tailwater... Brook Trout and sterile Rainbow Trout.

First up, will be marking mostly Brook Trout. We should have about 12,000 brook trout and we will also mark about 12,000 sterile Rainbow Trout to even out the workload. This fin clipping effort will take place on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery at 9:00 am EST. I would again appreciate your kind assistance.

The second fin clipping date will be to mark the major portion of sterile Rainbow Trout for stocking in the Cumberland tailwater. This should be a little bigger undertaking as we will have about 30,000 fish to mark. This fin clipping effort will take place on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery at 9:00 am EST.
You will want to bring neoprene gloves and definitely rain gear/waders so you can stay dry. Also, remember that all external rain gear, waders, and boots will need to be disinfected before entering the hatchery area so you should gather on the back side of the hatchery building by the garage door where we will do the disinfection. I plan to do everything the same as in the recent past: provide coffee, donuts in AM and meat/cheese tray, chips, cookies, soft drinks for lunch.
Larry Drake, from Derby City Fly Fishers, has already generously volunteered to coordinate his club?s volunteers. It would be very helpful if one person from each of the other organizations could be in charge of recruiting volunteers and communicate to me how many to expect so we can better plan for food.
Thank you! Your assistance with this effort is very much appreciated.

I'm pretty excited about the new species of trout being stocked...kind of anxious to see how they do.
