    Jerkbait Choices

What is a good universal color for a jerkbait? A color that will perform somewhat consistently on most lakes. What type of areas are jerkbaits most recommended for? I have heard to throwing it near a steep shoreline seems to work best.

silver/black, blue/silver, clear/white, blue/orange/silver....depends on the water color and the local forage. They are best in colder water...I would go with the suspending type. Fish them in areas like you mentioned, and off of secondary points.

Chrome or foil colors are good when there is some sun. Other than that just go with shad patterns. The big thing is water clarity if you don't have a couple feet of clarity your better off using a crankbait or spinnerbait.

The steep bank theory is a myth they will work anywhere the fish are. They are popular on grassy lakes from canada to florida if the clarity is right and the grass isn't too thick. George Cochran won a February tournament on Guntersville a few years ago with one fishing grass. They are also popular in northern natural lakes where everything is flat. They draw fish so the key is just being around bass. The reason people think they work best on steep banks is because thats where fish are in late winter/early spring on lakes where the technique started and around here.
