It is a very tough lake most of the time. One of the best days I ever had there was casting a bobber and minnow around wood. We caught everything in the lake. If you just want to have fun I would try that. If you just go after bass you might be disappointed. You can catch a big fish but it might be the only fish. I have fished all over the country and Guist can be one of the toughest lakes. Good luck
When i go there i take my bass lures, live minnows, wax worms and night crawlers and usually catch fish on one of those. You just never know what bait they will bite best.
It's a tough lake for bass, but there are bluegills around every bit of wood structure. 50 in half a day is common. There's very little bank fishing, but they rent boats if you need it.
It's also not a bad spot for channel cats. And up around the dam you can catch a zillion of those little yellow bass. I've never caught them in any other lake. They're mostly too small to eat (I guess, never really tried), but an amazingly good fight for their size.
Definitely take waxies, redworms and/or nightcrawlers. You and the kids will have alot of fun. Actually some really good bluegills in the lake. Plenty of the yellow bass as well. And they are good to eat as long as you get the red meat out of them.
don't know if you are taking a boat, if you are troll some baits, I like deep diving crank baits for trolling, don't let people tell you that you can't use a gas motor, I still catch bass and crappie and cats and panfish trolling a 40 hp motor at it's slowest speed, a really great way to find fish, then slow down and fish the area where you caught fish, read the book spoonpluging by buck perry, he is the grandfather of structure fishing, buck sez troll and it works well for me, good luck.
