This will probably get moved. I want to do some squirrel hunting in the morning from the boat. I don't want to take the shotgun is it legal to use a air rifle from the boat? PM me if you want. I posted in the hunting forum also but need an answer.
I bet if you ask 3 differnt game wardens. You will get 3the differant answers
p16 in the "Prohibited hunting methods" says that hunting for small game is permissible from a boat. Just like f&w, tell you something is ok when it is telling you what you can't do.
I've always been told you have to shoot from outside the boat. Lots of people float past my house squirrel hunting in jon boats. do you really think they step out to shoot?
I have done it when I was a kid with my dad. But we always took a shotgun and shot out of the boat. I was always told you could not shoot a rifle from the boat. I could not find anything saying you could or could not shoot an Air rifle from the boat.
Call fish and game is the best thing. but get the person you speak with ext, and full name. badge number if possible so your covered!
You can hunt from a boat, steel shot is required, and you can't be moving along with any motor, gas or electric, when shooting. I've done well on the TN River shooting squirrels from a boat - best time to go is when the leaves are completely off of the trees; you can see them from a long ways away, and easily move in for a good shot.
As for the air rifle, can't answer that one, I always pack a shotgun.
Legal for small game. Not legal for deer and turkey.
Waterfowl is a different animal altogether.
Can you do it at Taylorsville?
You'll need to look up the restrictions for the land/area you would be hunting. Some areas, like WMAs, have special regulations that you have to adhere to. It's like squirrel hunting from a boat along the banks of LBL require an LBL hunter's permit - might be something similar required for Taylorsville or special seasons aside from the general statewide season...
A number of years ago, I called the KDFWR to ask specifically about fishing while squirrel hunting from a boat at Taylorsville. They said it's OK as long as you're doing it safely. They also recommended notifying the conservation officer who works the lake to let him know what you're doing.
Things might have changed in the past ten years, so I'd recommend calling again before you go.
