This might be a dumb question but better safe than sorry. My boy got a little net and was down at the creek catching a bunch of minnows (or some type of small bait fish) with it and asked if we could use them as bait. We're probably not going to have a chance to fish for a few days so I made him release all of them but I got to thinking afterwards are there any laws against that? Like I said it might be a dumb question but I mostly just use artificial lures so I'm completely clueless on this topic. Is it legal? Are there only certain species that could be used? Are there any limits? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would think that they are most likely chubs. Which you can use.
Thank you Tyme2fish. I looked it up and it says any fish that is not considered a game fish can be taken for bait as long as it's less than 6 inches long and there is a 500 fish limit.
Depending on the waters just be careful you don't catch any baby asian carp and transplant.
If you catch any fantail minnows they are the absolute best minnow for smallmouth. Freeline them off points, especially in the fall, and they will tear them to pieces. I read somewhere that fantail minnows prey on smallmouth beds and the smallies have a natural instinct to kill fantails on sight.
