Picked up a few pieces of "trash" this weekend...

Well, some folks consider these "trash fish", but I think of them as prehistoric & golden goodness on the fly!!

Saturday was a tough day on the water. Since the lake has been down for a long time it's given enough time for the green vegetation to grow and grow everywhere... and now with the lake getting closer to summer pool it's giving the carp plenty of cover and plenty of stuff to munch on. Only had limited shots at them, but found some Gar laid up and suspended. Some of those dudes were a big as my leg, but the little guys kept getting in the way! Here's an example!

The deadly "rope fly" strikes again!

Today (Sunday) was a little better carp day, but mainly ran into laid up fish and some still spawning up in the green stuff!! You have to find pockets of mud where no weeds/grass have grown and that gives you a shot at either mudding fish or fish cruising looking for food. Found one that was hungry....

Tried some shots at fish feeding in the vegetation but would get hung up or land the fly right on top of them and they would spook out!

Can you share a pic/link/ recipe for the fly you were using for the gar?

I ran into huge pods of gar last year at my favorite fishing spot.

Caught a few on big, bushy articulated streamers, but my hookup success rate was really, really low using conventional flies.

    Thanks!

Here you go! Sorry I was out of town for a few days!!

If you look at those examples on that page, I'm throwing the ones at the bottom... Just take a #2 hook and wrap some lead wire thread on it to give it some weight. You want it down in the water column about 1 or 2 feet. Then take some nylon rope and unwind it and either twist it our or brush it out. All you do is tie about 4-5" of rope on the hook with whatever thread color you want. I always glue the head and then cut the hook off... Fish it like a giant streamer with fast strips... they will hang their teeth in the rope!!! The only PITA part is getting the rope out of the mouth. Take a pair of needle nose pliers and clean out teeth real good and they are good to go!

    Have fun!!
