    Which Hook???

For the past 5 years or so, basically the time ive really got into fishing, I have always used a #3 or #4 wide gap hook with my Texas Rig. I have started using the big 10" worms lately and seems like I really miss a lot of fish, way more than I hook into or land. Anyways, Im wondering if I should switch to a regular off set worm hook in #5. What works good for you guys as i am sure I can speak on behalf of all you that I HATE missing fish.

I used a 5/0 wide gap gamakatsu for years without any problem but last year i started missing a ton of fish and switched to a straight shank 5/0 hook....I still missed a lot of fish but atleast the ones i stuck stayed on

5/0 wide gap for me as well. If your fishing deep then I would use a Trokar hook because it is much sharper than other brands. When you have that much line off you want to make sure that if that hook makes any contact that it set properly. Also make sure that you are swinging the rod in a sweeping motion when setting the hook. If your pulling up on the rod you will miss many more.

I use a 4/0 EWG gamakatsu for almost every texas rigged application with the exception of when i throw small chunk/craw plastics when I am creek fishing, then I'll use a 1/0.

I use a straight offset worm hook 5/0 or 6/0.
Try one, you will get better hook sets.

Did you change anything else besides the presentation? Line? Rod? Fishing depth? Just thinking it might not be the hook itself. Maybe they need to hold it for a few seconds longer?

Changing the hook size and or style is easy enough. I like the Gammy EWG's and have tried the cheaper manufacture versions and had problems with them. What brand do you use?

    Re: Which Hook???

With the big worms I use Gamakatsu Monster EWG 6/0 or 7/0. I don't think I would use any thing else unless it was the Trokar Magworm in 6/0 - 8/0. Gammys are expensive enough for my budget though and they are very strong long lasting carbon steel hooks. 6/0 would be the smallest hook for me personally with a 10" worm.

Those black and blue 10" Berkley Power Worms with a Gammy 7/0 have been deadly for me on the ledges. I guess if you go with a straight hook you can get away with a smaller hook. Usually with this setup I'm fishing deeper or stained water so the larger hook presentation doesn't concern me as much.

I agree with DJD. The line and esp the rod are big players in the hookset.

The brand is as important as the size and style. I wouldn't throw anything other than Gamakatsu. I am sure that there are some other brands out there that will work but cheap worm hooks are not a bargain.

    Re: Which Hook???

I have used Gamakatsu's for years and for some unknown reason I picked up a pack of VMC fastgrips and I have never looked back. I rarely loose a fish once they button up with these hooks:
