Last week, I took some #1 offset worm hooks and tied a Spirit River I-Balz (5/32) to the bend under the eye and attached a Slider grub in a Texas fashion. See a pic at http://www.fishin.com/forums2/album....achmentid=3655
Smallmouth seem to love this set up, and I can quickly vary the color to match the water conditions. The only problem is that I have to cut the fly off and retie it every time a change grubs.
I've used a similar technique with Aberdeen hooks in sizes 4 and 6 where I put the I-Balz even with or below the hook point. I then trim the underside of the grub with a razor from the 2nd nub back to the tail. This allows the hook point to penetrate the plastic easier with the smaller gap. These work great on trout and panfish.
I use a Fenwick 756 fiberglass rod with a WF floating line, and these are about as heavy a fly as this combination wants to cast.
