Fishing extreme heat conditions can be difficult but there are some basic things to keep in mind. Bass will always follow the baitfish, and fish will always try to find their comfort level in any given season of the year. To find bass in extreme hot weather, the use of sonar or measuring water temperatures to find the thermocline is the key to find baitfish and bass suspending at their comfort level. Most of time the baitfish and bass will be at or slightly above the thermocline. If you are monitoring temperature, a sudden drop in water temperature at a certain depth indicates the top layer of the thermocline. On the sonar, the thermocline will appear as a band across the screen. Using a high gain on the sensitivity setting will help to pick the band up. A good place to start fishing is to fish where the top of the thermocline meets the bottom of the lake, especially where points, humps, ledges or other structure intersects the thermocline. Light penetration, water clarity, and wind conditions can also play a role on any given day. Lighter lines (10 lb test) and weighted deep running crankbaits with long cast are considerations to get the lure down to the fish. It's all about finding where the baitfish and bass are holding and then getting the lures to them. If hot daytime fishing is just too much for you, then the nightbite maybe the way to go. Good fishing everyone.
