i bought a 06 mercury 90 hp, it has been used very little, it runs great, but it is very hard to start when i haven't been to the lake for a week or two. but after started and warmed up, starts great all day. the key says push to choke, when i push the key, i don't hear a click. if the chock works it don't make any noise.has any one had this problem. if so would you please, tell me what you did to fix it . thanks:

mine only works if u turn the key to the on postion then push it

thanks, for the response. i can't hear the choke make any noise. by pushing the key before cranking or while cranking. i had a johnson motor before, and it would make a clicking noise when the key was pushed. i read on another topic that the late model mercurys don't have a choke, if this is true, why would the key switch say push to choke. i would like to get this cold starting problem fixed, so i can fish some this winter. does any one know, how the choke system works on a 2006 year model mercury 90 hp. if so, thanks.

It might have a primer whither then a choke,,,It dumps fuel stright in the carbs whither then having a flap to choke it to bring fuel in...But not much on newer motors

Is this engine and EFI or is it carburated? If it is an EFI, it doesn't have a choke. I run Yamahas, but even my carburated yamaha did not have a choke. It had a fuel atomizer that atomized the fuel and injected a puff of fuel into the carbs. This did not make a click, but I could push in the key on mine too. The key ignition system is universal, so the chocke feature is built in, but it didn't activate anything. At times it was tough to start, but there was a red switch on the side of one of the carburators that you could turn and this would act as a manual choke. My new Yamaha is a four stroke, enough said.

Watterdog, I have a newer mercury 4 stroke with EFI. Always had a carbed 2 stoke in the past. Found it hard to start when I first got it. Then read the manual that came with it.

Manual says to "NOT ADVANCE THE IDLE SPEED WHEN STARTING" do not give it any throttle when starting. Just start it in the neutral position. The electronic fuel injection will give it the amount of gas it needs to start. If you give it any gas it will flood. The proceedure for starting a flooded engine is to advance the throttle and choke. It notes the motor will run rough untill the flooded situation is cleared.

I stopped giving it any gas when starting and just choke. starts right up and runs smooth. Sounds like you are doing what I was doing, basicly flooding the motor when starting and then starting it with the flooded engine proceedure (although I did not know this was the flloded engine proceedure when I was doing it)

Betcha a $1.00 this is why you are having startup problems.

Yes, my 4 stoke EFI 75 hp does have a choke. I have used it starting the engine. The choke is extremly quiet and I do not hear it engage. But there are times If I do not push the choke switch on the key it won't start untill I do. So I can guess the choke is working.

I have a 200 merc EFI it has a flush mount so the key is on the dash, it has a push in to choke but it has no choke,I have to push the button on the shifter and push it forward to advance the throttle, it will turn over about 6 times and fire up, and only a touch of the key the rest of the trip, spring, summer, fall, winter. it has since 1993

How's your fuel lines looking? Sounds like you might have a pinhole in it somewhere that's causing the pressure to bleed off while sitting for a long period.

Normally an EFI doesn't have a choke. I've got a 200 EFI and even thought the ignition switch says push to choke, there isn't one. I was always told that when starting, turn the key switch on, and wait a couple of seconds before trying to start which allows the pressure to build.

Ok, after reading additional posts I got my manual out and again read the starting instructions. Low and behold there is no mention of a choke.So my choking is probably not doing anything.

It does say "Pump the primer bulb on the fuel line" "Do not advance the neutral fast idle speed feature on the remote control. The enricher will automaticaly increase engine speed for starting and warm up." The starting a flooded engine proceedure says to advance the neutral idle speed fully and crank motor till it starts and reduce the speed after starting.

I was used to the 2 stoke carbed motors were I would advance the Idle speed in neutral, Crank the starter and choke untill it fires. When I used this proceedure on my EFI it was very slow starting and would crank for an excesive amount of time before it would fire. Then it would idle poorly untill warm. When I started just cranking the motor in neutral without advancing the idle throttle it fires with just a few cranks and runs smooth in idle.


I still think WD slow starting issue will be solved with this starting proceedure.

I learned something myself as well, that my pushing that choke button is really just a good luck ritual.

thanks for the reply donkey, i've tried it every way, it's just hard to start. when i get ready to start it. i pump the bulb up tight, push the key in for about a 5 secounds, crank it and it will hit the first couple of turns, but won't start. then just crank for ever before fireing up. then starts great all day. ps. i have not used it, but i did put a can of starting fluid in the storage box. thinking of being stranded on the lake, in the winter is scary. so i thought if this happens. a can of starting fluid would be nice to have.
