year!
It’s a great time of year to fish Kentucky Lake!
The lake is dropping at a fast rate right now; there will be a few
days of fantastic flipping left as the water drops close to summer
pool. The fish are forced out of the flooded back water brush and
timber and it puts them right outside of the edge in the buck brush.

I am flipping a ZOOM baby brush hogs and Z Hogs into the brush, I am
using Seaguar’s Kazen Braid 50lb and a 7ft 8 heavy action rod, I’m
using a 3/8 weight and if it’s windy I will use a ½ ounce. I like to
use a big hook I prefer the Owner twist lock 5/0 most of the time.
Also it’s important to use a tungsten weight, with the sensitivity of
the tungsten along with the sensitivity of the braid line; it will
help you feel those light bites. Some of my biggest fish will just
inhale the bait and you won’t even feel this bite. It’s so important
to very lightly pick up your bait so that you can feel the fish on
there without having the fish spit out the lure then it’s too late. A
lot of time you get one chance at catching these big fish!

With the water dropping down to near summer pool by Sunday I will be
looking for fish out in the shallow grass beds. The back of creeks,
main lake flats near spawning bays will be my target. I have been
catching some fish by doing this the last few days.

I am fishing a medium crankbait in green gizzard and root beer pattern
from Bag5 baits, also I’ve been doing really well with a Rat-L-Trap in
the grass, you really need to be letting the trap tip the top of the
grass, and I am getting a lot of hard strikes from the bass. I am
fishing both baits of Seaguars 15 Abrazx Fluorocarbon. I like a 7ft
rod cranking rod when doing this. The trap s that I’m using is ½ and ¾
ounce if the water is stained I’m fishing the Gold Blue 26B and
Chartreuse Shiner 52. In the cleaner water Black Chrome, Emerald
shiner 424 and thread fin shad 436.

Also I’ve done well in the mornings and cloudy days with top water
around the same areas. With top water fish Monofilament 20ln Seaguar
or braid will work.

I am looking for grass that’s has a lot of holes in it, I am using my
Lowrance HDS8 to locate these areas, out on the main lake flats and
back of the creeks. The grass is growing really good I its fresh green
life attracts all types of bait with the bass.

Spring guide trips
Book you spring trip now to reserve your date. I still have a few days
left in May and June. Book an 8 hour bass trip one or two people
$325.00 or a 6 hour foe $250.00 fuel included and bait is included.

Ledge Fishing on the water class

If you’re new to Kentucky Lake or just haven’t been able to figure out
how to fish the hundreds of miles of ledges that it has to offer. Then
this class is for you. Fishing the ledges is something a lot of
anglers struggle with. Understanding what ledges hold fish, when they
hold fish and why they hold fish is something I can teach you. I will
help you eliminate 90% of the lake in a short time. See what type of
areas hold fish and how to find the bait.
Get on schools of fish and get them fired up! This is some of my
favorite techniques on this amazing lake. Just give me a call or email

The water way up into the bushes now, and its making some fish hard to
reach. I am still fishing back of the bays, creeks, the islands and
the back water areas up towards New Johnsonville area. The fish love
the buck brush here so flipping that is my main focus. When flipping
the buck brush one thing I try to teach my clients is to look at the
bush and visualize where the main branches run into making the stump
of the bush. This is where I will make my first cast.

I see a lot of guys flipping the edges of the bush and not hitting the
key area. You will catch some of your bigger fish by doing this.
Another thing I will do is leave the bait in one area and just shake
my rod tip not moving the bait but just enough tip action to make the
bait quiver and leaving it in one place. This has always been a key
thing in my flipping.

I’m seeing fry in some of the areas, so it will be good to try some
top water soon. A spinnerbait and a shallow running crankbaits like
the Bag5 1.5 in green gizzard or chartreuse green gizzard if the water
has some color. As far as spinnerbaits I make my own and I always fish
it in a Blue Glimmer.

I am flipping with 25lb test Seagaur AbrazX fluorocarbon or 50lb
Seaguar Kazen braid, with a 7 ½ heavy action flipping stick, a 4/0
Owner hook and a 3/8 tungsten weight.

Im casting the bag5 and spinnerbait on 17 to 20 lb Seagaur
Flourocarbon

The lake is at 359.23
Water Temp is (54-55)

of year!

With the warmer weather and rising water we have had the last week,
the fish have started to move shallower. An angler can find fish in
several depths right now, so focusing on your style of fishing may
play into your favor.

I am catching good Bass on both main lake flats and on the secondary
channels leading back into the spawning flats. This week I really will
focus on these secondary channels banks and flats leading into the
bays. The shad have started moving up on these flats and the bass are
right behind them.

Fishing the creeks will be your best bet right now, up around the New
Johnsonville area I am fishing creeks and main lake flats. Try to
follow breaks and deeper water leading into these flats. Some of the
areas have grass on these flats so don’t pass it up, the grass will
really start to hold a lot of fish and bait.

My key bites are coming on a shallow running 2.5 Bag5 crank bait in
green gizzard and our new color Sexy Citrus! A color that I have been
working with Bag5 baits for a while now and we finally got the color
to perfection.
A ¾ ounce Rat L Trap in 52 chartreuse shiner, shad patterns and 315
rootbeer. I am fishing the rootbeer trap on the gravel banks leading
into the flats, but the key is to hop it like a jig. The chartreuse
shiner I like on the flats and in the grass.
I am fishing both baits on 15 to 17 lb Seagaur abrazx fluorocarbon.

The 2.5 Sexy Citrus I’m fishing on 20lb test Seagaur abrazx
fluorocarbon.

A spinnerbait bite and swimbait bite has also been good, the bass will
be moving and feeding so keep looking, once you find them you can
catch several good fish in a area.

In all of these areas I will also flip a jig, especially around any
brush or wood that you will see. I’ve been fishing a ½ ounce jig with
a ZOOM Fat Albert green pumpkin purple trailer. The ZOOM Z hog has
been good also for me in watermelon candy in some of the flooded cover
that you can find.

I am flipping with 25lb test Seagaur AbrazX fluorocarbon and a 7 ½
heavy action flipping stick, a 4/0 Owner hook and a 3/8 tungsten
weight.

Crappie

The Crappie fishing has really picked up this week with the best to
come. Fish are scattered you can catch them out on the creek channels
spider rigging or up on the flats. Also you can cast around some of
the brush piles and crappie beds up on the flats. I have caught fish
suspended over 25ft of water with the fish staging in about 15-12 foot
depths. I have also caught some good Blacks moving into the flats in 6
to 8ft of water. Natural shad and chartreuse and pink combos have been
the best for me.

Looks like it’s finally going to warm up and be spring starting this
weekend. Fishing has
been good and I really look for both Bass and Crappie to really start
feeding heavily with
the warmer water temps that we will see this week.

I have been catching good Bass on both main lake flats and on the
secondary channels
leading back into the spawning flats. This week I really will focus on
these secondary
channels banks and flats leading into the bays. The shad should start
moving up on
these flats and the bass will follow them. Also on the main lake flats
as well, a lot of
these deeper water fish that guys have been catching on Alabama rigs
will start moving
up on the flats, our water is beginning to rise so the bass and shad
will move up with the
water.

Up closer to the New Johnsonville area, look for the bass and shad to
move into the
grass on main lake flats. Also right on the edge of the grass flats
have been key areas
especially where you know there are mussel beds.

My key bites are coming on a shallow running 2.5 Bag5 crank bait in
green gizzard and
our new color Sexy Citrus! A color that I have been working with Bag5
baits for a while
now and we finally got the color to perfection.

Crappie

The crappie fishing has been slow the last few days due to weather but
I really feel they
will start feeding heavily this weekend as well. Fish are scattered
you can catch them

can cast around
some of the brush piles and crappie beds up on the flats. I have
caught fish suspended

shad and chartreuse
and pink combos have been the best for me.

I REALLY DON’T HAVE MUCH TO CHANGE HERE, MAINLY BECAUSE THE
WEATHER
HASN’T CHANGED MUCH, ALTHOUGH LOOKS LIKE ITS GOING TO WARM UP
SOME
THIS WEEK. SO I WILL BE STILL FISHING THE SAME PRE SPAWN AREAS.
CRAPPIE I LOOK FOR THEM TO PICK UP WITH THIS WARMER WEEK
FORCASTED.
The weather seems to be keeping the bass in the same areas. There are
several patterns going on right now. The two strongest for me are main
lake drops/flats and the channel banks leading back into spawning
flats.

On the main lake flats look for bait fish, and also bass. A good
Lowrance unit is a must when fishing these offshore areas. I am seeing
the bait and fish before I ever make a cast. The baits that are
working best are spinnerbaits, Alabama rigs, crankbaits and a jig. The
fish seem to be feeding in the 9 to 5 ft zone on these flats with my
boat sitting in 20 to 30 foot of water.

The creek fish are holding still in the same areas, some fish are
wanting to move back staging in the 7 to 12 foot range on chunk rock
channel banks. When we get a few days of sun these fish are even
moving really shallow back on the flats you can see shad present in
these areas. I’m fishing a spinnerbait, jig, Rat L Trap and swim bait.
Seems like a white spinnerbait is working best early then late morning
the Rat L Trap and swim bait is what the bass prefer.

Im fishing the crankbait on 12lb test Seaguar and the swim bait, Rat L
Trap and spinnerbait on 17 to 20 lb test Seaguar AbrazX Fluorocarbon.

Crappie
The Crappie bite has really picked up. Although its still a day to day
thing. It wont be long till they really kick in. Ive been catching
them spider rigging 10 to 20 ft out on the ledges, and also a few fish
are moving into the flats, I guess they are hopping it warms up soon
like me!
Not catching big numbers myself, but some good ones. Chartreuse/pink
and shad colors as the water is clearing, has been the best color for
me in Big Sandy area, I’m also tipping the tube with a minnow.

I just fished the BFL here on Kentucky Lake and finished 24th with
13lbs 15 ozs, wasn’t what I expected to do. I was on some good fish
averaging 3 ¾ pound and up. I still caught all my fish on a Jig, Root
beer colored shad rap and one on a Alabama rig. We had steady 15 to 20
MPH winds all day making the run south tough, I had about 4 hours of
fishing time and wasn’t able to move around like I wanted so I just
committed to one area. I only caught 7 fish over the limit size thru
out the day.

My son Shane fished as a co angler and finished 13th fishing the same
style.

The weather is forecasting still a typical early spring with a few
days of warm weather and then the traditional cold fronts moving in. I
will still continue fishing the same areas I have the last week, but
will fish out a little more off the shore when the fronts move in. Of
course I will expand my locations looking for more fish in other
areas.

I’m catching fish on chunk rock channel banks leading into the
spawning bays. A typical pattern here this time of year. With this
pattern I’m fishing a number 7 shad rap painted in rootbeer pattern by
bag5baits.com, 80% of my fish are being caught on this bait right now.
I have had several over 5lbs just in the last week, Lots of 3 to 4 lb
fish. I’m fishing this bait very slow with spinning tackle and 8 lb
test seaguar fluorocarbon. I’m also fishing a Rat-L-Trap in the same
areas, I’m not getting as many bites on it right now but once the
water warms to about 50 degrees they will get on the trap better, a
jig is also working. The water is still really 45 to 46 degrees; I
feel the true temp is what you have in the AM period of the day
because what we gain during mid day we lose at night, causing the
temperature dropping at night.
The best bite is at 12 to 3, I’m seeing this everyday but you can
still catch them thru ought the day.
Thru March you will want to use the shad rap and crank it as slow as
you can, I have for years done really good on a rootbeer colored rat-
l-trap on Kentucky Lake. I have teamed up with Bag 5 Baits to get the
shad rap painted in this rootbeer color. We are also working on a
rootbeer with some burnt orange on the back of the bait just enough to
give it a little flash.

The shad rap is key because you can crank it so slow, Leaving it in
the strike zone of the fish longer in this cold water.

I’m also fishing main lake grass edges out into the channel. I’m
swimming a swim bait and fishing a jerk bait in these areas. The water
has been good on the main lake. Also an Alabama rigs system is working
really well this week, and it will continue to play a big role in the
fishing thru March.

My patterns are still the same this week. Only thing that I have found
myself is the main lake bite. I have been able to find some good
schools of fish relating to the main lake adjacent to the creeks and
bays. A crankbait, jig and Alabama rig has been catching the fish.
Fishing has been really good and it’s going to get better every week.
Been catching some big fish right now the fish want to feed; I look
for the next couple weeks for the fishing to be super!

The fishing has been tough the last few weeks due to all the rain,
high currents and muddy water. The lake has cleared up some but we
just got hammered with storms and heavy rain again. I have been
catching most of my fish on a jerk bait Bag5baits.com original clown,
chartreuse rootbeer and rootbeer or something that is a little more
visible in this stained to murky water. Also a medium running
crankbait Bag5baits.com chartreuse rootbeer and sexy green gizzard
These are some of my best colors to use on Kentucky Lake, from Jan.
thru April.
Im fishing both baits slow, im using 12 to 15lb Seaguar AbrazX
fluorocarbon with a Duckett fishing 6ft 6inch med action rod, this rod
is my choice for jerkbaits and top water. I can control the shorter
rod and give both my jerkbaits and top water the quick rod twitching I
need to get the best action out of the bait. I like to keep the rod
pointed at the lure and work it downward towards me. With a longer rod
you have to work the lure from the side. So the Duckett 6ft 6inch,
medium action rod will keep me more bite!
With the crankbait I like the Duckett 7ft medium action or 7ft 6inch
medium heavy action crankin rod. These Duckett rods come with a 20
year warranty.

I have also been fishing a ½ to ¾ Kentucky lake pro lures football jig
in green pumpkin chartreuse or green pumpkin purple with a green
pumpkin ZOOM super chunk, in this stained water you will want to dip
it in chartreuse dye. Im fishing the jig on a Duckett 7ft 6inch xtra
heavy flippin stick on 20 lb Seaguar AbrazX Flourocarbon line. I am
fishing the jig at the mouth of the creeks focusing on the channel
walls slowly working it down the deeper areas try to feel for any
stumps or big rocks. If you feel one of these try to make several cast
to that area the water is cold so you may have to entice the bass into
striking.

Crappie
It won’t be long till the Kentucky lake crappie makes the run into
spawning grounds. This is some of the best crappie fishing of the
year, with the mild winter I’m predicting that the spawn will come
early like last year. March and April are key months to get a cooler
full. Don’t wait till the last minute to make your reservations.

Main lake Grass
Fishing is still good right now on Kentucky Lake; the big fish are
still feeding this time of year. There is a lot of fish up in the main
lake grass. I am fishing strictly main lake. Finding the right grass
bed will just take some work, but when you do find the right one there
will be a school of fish there. My best bite is coming on
spinnerbaits, Rat-L-Traps and jerk baits. I’m using shad patterns in
all of these baits. Im not fishing any of them fast, I’ve also been
using the Bama rig to take some fish. There is no secret here just
have to locate the right main lake grass.

I am fishing my spinnerbait and Rat-l-Trap bait on 17-20 lb Seaguar
Abrazx Fluorocarbon, Jerkbait on 10lb Seaguar Flourocarbon
Bama rig on 50lb braid

Flipping bite
This is a great time of year to catch bass flipping in the grass; I am
flipping a ½ to ¾ ounce jig blue and green pumpkin with a ZOOM super
chunk. We have caught lots of good fish flipping the grass. I am also
flipping the ZOOM Z-Hog also on the jig and alone with a tungsten
weight. I’m flipping on 25lb Seaguar AbrazX.

Crappie
I do a lot of crappie fishing throughout the winter, it’s a good time
of year to catch them. I have been catching them about 12 to 18 foot
deep. With a horse head or spider rigging tubes. Been catching some
nice fish, mostly blacks but even this spring the black were on then.

Fall fishing is a lot of fun here on Kentucky Lake and it’s just
begun, if you need any info or a guide please let me know

Shallow water pattern:

Back of Creeks
The fishing hasn’t changed much, still holding the mid fall patterns.
I look to see things to hold for the next week with stable weather
patterns this week. SO I don’t have a lot to update this week, which
is a good thing! The fish are still in a lot of the same areas. In a
couple of the creeks that I have had big school of bass have changed,
due to some of the milfoil breaking up. The main lake grass and the
creeks are still producing the best. In some of the creeks the milfoil
is breaking up. You will see this as we keep going deeper into fall.
Milfoil will break up in the shallows before hydrilla will, It s just
a more fragile aquatic plant in its nature. So if you had a creek that
had fish in the back of it the shad may start moving out of these
creeks. Just relocate the shad and you will find the bass in the same
areas. The bass/bait will migrate out the same way they came in,
following the deeper banks or channels that they followed in.

The back end of the creeks you can find big schools of largemouth
feeding and schooling up on the shad, although they seem to be
schooling individually rather than in a group. It’s pretty obvious in
the creeks when you find these fish. Just keep jumping from creek to
creek until you locate them, grass is an important key to holding the
shad and the bass. Try to move around in these creeks slowly these
fish can get spooked. And it will make them aware of you!

Spinnerbaits have been very good; they are hitting the bait very hard.
Small shallow running crankbaits, Rat-L –Traps and the Gun Fish! When
fishing the Rat-L-Trap make a long cast and let the bait fall to the
bottom, hop it back like your hoping a jig, they love that
presentation, give it a try if the grass is sparse or in a bay that
has no grass.

I am leaving this in my fishing report for the anglers who haven’t
seen yet. Its just a good guide for you to decide where you like to
fish. This is a huge lake and hopefully this will help you break it
down.
My fishing patterns are still primarily fishing grass (hydrilla)
matt’s south of Paris, and shallow flats with scattered milfoil from
Paris to Blood River areas. Seems like there is mainly Milfoil growing
in the mid section of the lake and the hydrilla is growing further
south on the lake. About 4 miles north of Paris Landing you will see
the difference; you will see the hydrilla matt’s all the way to New
Johnsonville. Back in some of the creeks south I am finding Milfoil
also. I have been catching more fish up tight in the grass.

Main Lake Grass
Most of these fish are 2 ½ to 3 pound fish, with a few 5 pound fish
but I am catching more big fish now.

Spinnerbaits and chatter style baits in white or shad colors have
caught more fish for me this week and i look to see that going into
this week also. It’s been windy a lot so use that to your advantage
and that helps the spinnerbait bite! Even its rough out there on the
main lake this will get some of those bigger hard to catch bass in the
boat for you. These are Kentucky Lake pro lures, It’s a bait I have
made for years. I’m still fishing the abundant grass mats on the main
lake, I have been catching a lot of good fish, and there has been an
awesome early bite too. But fishing is good all day long. I am
flipping a jig (Blk/Blue ½) and a ZOOM Z-Hog and also a baby brush hog
has been good.im flipping it tight in the grass catching some of my
bigger fish. On the outside edges I’m fishing a buzz bait,
spinnerbait, Gun Fish and also a rat l trap, everything in white or a
shad pattern. The top water is been a great bite early and on cloudy
days but if it’s windy sling the spinnerbait at them, they are
hammering it! Use 20 pd line or be sorry!

The frog bite is really slowed down; I will keep one on the deck of my
Nitro just to throw into some of the holes I see in the hydrilla mats
on the main lake. A popping frogs seems to be better than just a frog,
they seem to be wanting more action and noise in a top water bait.

When out on the lake look for the pelicans, they will show you where
the abundant bait is, these birds eat a lot of shad. It’s so awesome
to observe how they will hunt together, I will see 3 or more birds
swim alongside each other pushing the bait up against a grass wall and
they all scoop down at the same time feeding on the shad, its cool
because they are doing the same type of feeding as the bass are,
pushing the shad up against these wall of grass!

I like to look at a grass bed as if it was a lake itself, observing
all the points, pockets, lanes thru the grass and wind and current
direction.

I am fishing the Chatter baits, spinnerbaits (shad Patterns) and Rat L
Traps on 17lb Sea guar AbrazX Fluorocarbon.
Buzzbaits on 20lb and flipping with 50lb braid or20lb Seaguar
fluorocarbon.
The spinnerbait, buzzbait and chatter baits a 1/2 white and the Rat-L-
trap is a ½ ounce Zombie 540 Chrome blk Zombie and a 436 Threadfin
Shad High Def and a ½ Black/Chrome.
Gun Fish shad pattern
Casting - I am using a 7ft BPS cranking rod with a high speed reel.
Flipping with a 7ft 10 heavy action rod and a high speed BPS reel

Ledge Pattern:

Fishing the ledges is the last pattern I would focus on right now
I have been able to have some good days fishing shallows ledges in 6
to 10 ft depths at the mouths of the creeks.
On Medium diving Crankbaits and the Kentucky Lake Pro Football jig in
green pumpkin/ chartreuse seems to be the best. I am fishing a ¾ ounce
jig on 17lb test Sea guar Abraz X Flourocarbon and the crankbait on
12lb. Also a Carolina rig will catch fish, using a baby brush hog.
Looking for bait on my Humminbird unit is one key factor in locating
fish. If I don’t see bait and bass I won’t bother fishing the spot.

Its been a pretty stable week with the weather, fishing just keeps
getting better. There been a good flipping bite in the grass also.

I have been doing well this week with buzzbaits, spinnerbaits in white
or shad colors. These are Ky lake pro lures, It’s a bait I have made
for years and they will really catch fish. I’m still fishing the
abundant grass mats on the main lake, I have been catching a lot of
good fish, and there has been an awesome early bite too. But fishing
is good all day long. I am flipping a jig (Blk/Blue ½) and a ZOOM Z-
Hog tight in the grass catching some of my bigger fish. on the outside
edges I’m fishing a buzz bait, spinnerbait and also a rat l trap,
everything in white or a shad pattern.

Still getting fish on the frog bite as well ,you will really want to
pay attention to fish moving around the grass and under the matt’s. If
I see anything move at all or see bait coming to the surface( they
know danger is near and will move up to the surface), quickly cast to
that area, over half the fish we catch in a day’s time we see this
activity and cast to it. If you get the bait in there quickly you will
catch that fish. Don’t over work the lure, very subtle twitches barely
making the bait move is what you want to do when casting to the fish
that have shown themselves.

Tackle and Lures
My best top water bite is coming by fishing frogs in the grass, the
BPS Kermy frog and a white buzz bait, rat l traps, chatter bait style
lures and spinnerbaits. I’m really fishing a variety of baits each day
due to all the fishing pressure.
Flipping bite is good as well I have been flipping a zoom z hog and a
jig blk/blue and green pumpkin with a blk/blue super chunk

I like to look at a grass bed as if it was a lake itself, observing
all the points, pockets, lanes thru the grass and wind and current
direction.

I am fishing the Chatter baits, spinnerbaits and Rat L Traps on 17lb

please idle if you are out of the channel buoys.

Fall fishing is a lot of fun here on Kentucky Lake and it’s just
begun, if you need any info or a guide please let me know

Shallow water pattern:
Plenty of changes going on last week, Rise in lake levels, then drop
back down and cold fronts. Fishing has still been really good.

Back of Creeks
The back end of the creeks you can find big schools of largemouth
feeding and schooling up on the shad. It’s pretty obvious in the
creeks when you find these fish. Just keep jumping from creek to creek
until you locate them, grass is an important key to holding the shad
and the bass. Try to move around in these creeks slowly these fish can
get spooked. And it will make them aware of you!

Main Lake Grass
If you can find scattered grass Hydrilla right where it matt’s up is
where I have been finding my schools of fish. In some areas the fish
are schooling all day long. Most of these fish are 2 ½ to 3 pound
fish, with a few 5 pound fish but I am catching more big fish now.

Lots of tournaments have been here so there has been a lot of
pressure on these fish. When this happens you need to pay attention to
the other anglers, even you may be fishing the same grass beds think
outside the box, pay attention to what they are fishing. I pay close
attention to what the other anglers are fishing. This will tell me
what I can fish in these areas. If I see every one fishing frogs
buzzbaits Ect. I will use a different lure sometime a spook or Lucky
Crafts Gun fish, or if I see everyone fishing spinnerbaits go to a
chatter bait style lure. I promise you this observation will increase
your catch ratio. In tournament practice most anglers know to only
catch a couple fish and move, but what you will have is several guys
doing this thru out several days, so in truth many of those fish have
been stuck. Remember you’re not only fishing the fish but also fishing
the other anglers as well!

I am finding fish on the main lake grass. Look for abundant bait
(shad). On the cooler nights the bait will move out into deeper water,
and then as the sun comes up the bait will start moving in the grass
to feed on algae. My best action is between 9 and 1. You can catch
these fish all day long but the bite is slower.

You will really want to pay attention to fish moving around the grass
and under the matt’s. If I see anything move at all or see bait coming
to the surface( they know danger is near and will move up to the
surface), quickly cast to that area, over half the fish we catch in a
day’s time we see this activity and cast to it. If you get the bait in
there quickly you will catch that fish. Don’t over work the lure, very
subtle twitches barely making the bait move is what you want to do
when casting to the fish that have shown themselves.

Shallow running crankbaits have been doing well again its cause the
fish haven’t seen much of them, you will have to target all the points
of the grass lanes and any place a bass can hide and ambush.

I like to look at a grass bed as if it was a lake itself, observing
all the points, pockets, lanes thru the grass and wind and current
direction.

Fishing Tip- I will take a black frog and take a white/silver sharpie
or white finger nail polish and color a white shad on the belly of the
bait. The white against this black frog looks like a small shad from
the silhouette that the bass will see. Most of the shad that the bass
are feeding on is this year’s fry. So this will look as a fry as it
skitters across the surface.
I am getting more strikes by working the bait fast a few quick
twitches and the pausing, and repeating the process. ( except when I
see a fish move or bust shad I will cast to the area and then barely
twitch the bait, because I want to keep it right where he just
exploded on bait, he simply thinks that it’s a wounded shad)
You will want to use a 7’10” St Croix Avid (Flippin Stick) with Braid
line; I will use 50pd test Sea gaur, Kanzen braid and a high speed
reel. The rod, braid and a high speed reel is a MUST! You will lose
too many fish if you don’t have the proper set up.

I am fishing the Chatter baits, spinnerbaits and Rat L Traps on 17lb
Sea guar AbrazX Fluorocarbon
The spinnerbait and chatter baitis a 1/2 white and the Rat-L-trap is a
½ ounce Zombie 540 Chrome blk Zombie and a 436 Threadfin Shad High Def
and a ½ Black/Chrome.
I am using a 7ft BPS cranking rod with a high speed reel.

Ledge Pattern:

Scott Patton Kentucky Lake Fishing Report: 9-3-12

Water Temp is holding near 82
You will want to navigate with caution. If you don’t know the water,

Shallow water pattern:
In the last couple weeks I have been catching more fish up tight in
the grass. If you can find scattered grass Hydrilla right where it
matt’s up is where I have been finding my schools of fish. In some
areas the fish are schooling all day long. Most of these fish are 2 ½
to 3 pound fish, with a few 5 pound fish. I am finding fish on the
main lake grass and also in the back of some creeks. Look for abundant
bait (shad). On the cooler nights the bait will move out into deeper
water, and then as the sun comes up the bait will start moving in the
grass to feed on algae. My best action is between 7 and 11 am. You can
catch these fish all day long but the bite is slower. Key Note here-
if you’re able to fish in the evening that may be the best fishing of
the day. The reason is like I said the bait moves out of the grass at
night and moves back into the grass to feed as the sun warms up. So
what happens is there is more shad in the shallow grass at this time
of day (evening), so the bass really feed heavily then.

Tackle and Lures
My best bite is coming by fishing frogs in the grass, the BPS Kermy
frog black 09, 04 and Strike kings 47
Fishing Tip- I will take a black frog and take a white/silver sharpie
and color a white shad on the belly of the bait. The white against
this black frog looks like a small shad from the silhouette that the
bass will see. Most of the shad that the bass are feeding on is this
year’s fry. So this will look as a fry as it skitters across the
surface.
I am getting more strikes by working the bait fast a few quick
twitches and the pausing, and repeating the process.
You will want to use a 7 ½ ft or longer stiff action rod (Flippin
Stick) with Braid line, I will use 50pd test Sea gaur, Kanzen braid
and a high speed reel.

My second pattern in the grass is fishing Rat-L Traps and spinner
baits on the outside edges of the grass beds. Again you will want to
find the scattered clumps of the Hydrilla and fish the edges of it. I
am working the baits slowly letting it hit the grass then ripping the
bait free and let it fall as I retrieve.
This pattern is working both in the mouths of creeks and main lake
grass.

I am fishing the Trap on 15lb Sea guar AbrazX Fluorocarbon and the
spinnerbait on 17lb.
The spinnerbait is a ¾ white and the Rat-L-trap is a ½ ounce Zombie
540 Chrome blk Zombie and a 436 Threadfin Shad High Def.
I am using a 7ft BPS cranking rod with a high speed reel.

Ledge Pattern:
The ledge bite is tough on the south end of the lake due to the
abundant grass keeping the bait and bass shallow.

I’m catching some fish in the 12 to 18ft range. On Deep Diving
Crankbaits and the Kentucky Lake Pro Football jig in green pumpkin/
chartreuse seems to be the best. I am fishing a ¾ ounce jig on 17lb
test Sea guar Abraz X Flourocarbon and the crankbait on 12lb. If it’s
too windy I will switch to a 1 ounce jig. Also a Carolina rig will
catch fish, using a baby brush hog. Under water shallow humps and
ledges seems to be working better. Looking for bait on my Humminbird
unit is one key factor in locating fish. If I don’t see bait and bass
I won’t bother fishing the spot.

Water Temp is holding near 88

You will want to navigate with caution. If you don’t know the water,
please idle if you are out of the channel buoys.
Make sure you take plenty of liquids and sunscreen! Try to get out
early!

If you’re planning on fishing Kentucky Lake this coming week, you can
catch plenty of fish in the grass. Or if you prefer the ledges it’s
hit or miss depending on current and feeding of the fish.

Shallow water pattern:
I have been doing better shallow than on the ledges. There is a lot of
shad fry still in the grass along with plenty of good size shad. It’s
amazing what good aquatic vegetation can do for a fishery.

I have been catching fish all day long on top water the best times are
around 7 am till 930am for the bigger fish if you can catch a cloudy
day then it will be better all day. Also I’m flipping the grass with
ZOOMS, Z Hog, Ol monster worms and Brush Hogs, in green pumpkin magic
and blk blue. I am using a 7ft 6 flipping stick with 20lb Abraz X Sea
guar fluorocarbon line and Owners 5/0 Twist lock hook with a ½ weight.

Also I have been catching them early by burning a ½ ounce white
spinnerbait thru the grass. A ½ ounce blk/chrome rattle trap has been
good fishing the windy outside edges of the grass, I’ve noticed
there’s been a little more current and its pulling the bait outside of
the grass, the cold fronts also has moved the bait into deeper water
at night as the sun comes up so will the bait and then move back into
the grass to feed.

There is a lot of grass out there but if you find the bait you will
find the fish they are grouped up in good schools. This I think has
made the ledge bite not as good this year, because there is still so
many fish in the grass.

Ledge Pattern:
This is still about the same.
I’m catching some fish in the 12 to 18ft range. The Kentucky Lake Pro
Football jig in green pumpkin/ chartreuse seems to be the best. I am
fishing a ¾ ounce jig on 17lb test Sea guar Abraz X Flourocarbon. If
it’s too windy I will switch to a 1 ounce jig. Also a Carolina rig
will catch fish, using a baby brush hog. I am fishing a lot of deeper
water now 18 to 30 foot deep. Under water humps and deeper drops. A
drop shot with a ZOOM Fluke in Blue pearl silver glitter. I’m using
6lb test line so that I can have better feel, just make sure that your
drag is set light so that you don’t have any problem landing the
bigger fish. Looking for bait on my Humminbird unit is one key factor
in locating fish.

Shallow water pattern:

I am still fishing a shallow water pattern in the grass, My son and I
finished 3rd in a tournament last week with our best 5 going over 19.6
it took 20.12 pounds to win. We had about 20 fish over the 15 inch
size limit also we had 2 over 5pounds. I have to admit the quality
fish are getting harder to catch in the grass. I’m fishing a shad
pattern Kentucky Lake pro lures spinnerbait and Buzz bait in the
scattered grass clumps. I have been using top water near the thicker
grass and the spinner bait I am fishing it in the lanes thru the
grass, focusing on the edges of the grass clumps. We are still having
some really well days this week catching 20 to 25 bass a day, along
with some really good quality bass. An overcast day sure helps on this
pattern.

I am also casting a ZOOM fluke to catch a few fish. I am fishing the
fluke weightless twitching it in the holes I can see in the grass. You
will want to use a 4/0 Trokar hook with 17 to 20 pound test line.

Ledge Pattern:

I’m catching some fish in the 12 to 18ft range. The Kentucky Lake Pro

White Bass

These guys are feeding on the abundant shad population. They will show
themselves a lot by surface feeding. I have been fishing a ½ and ¼
ounce Rattle Trap in Chrome/Blue or Chrome/Black on 12 lb test line.
Look for them on the main lake river ledge. You usually can cruise the
main lake drop and spot these guys with your side imaging, along with
the baitfish.

If you’re planning on fishing Kentucky Lake this coming week, you will
find a few fish shallow in the grass still, but this is starting to
get harder to do for me. Secondary ledges and main lake ledges are

Shallow water pattern:

My better shallow water pattern is looking for shad that are still in
the grass. If you can find some bait then I can usually find a few
good fish in the grass. Im fishing a shad pattern Kentucky Lake pro
lures spinnerbait in the scattered grass clumps. I am fishing shallow
ridges on the south end of the lake. Catching the bigger fish in the
thickest grass I can find. The spinner bait I am fishing it in the
lanes thru the grass, focusing on the edges of the grass clumps. We
have had some really good days this week catching 20 to 25 bass a day,
along with some really good quality bass. An overcast day sure helps

fluke weightless twitching it in the holes I can see in the grass. You

Ledge Pattern:

This pattern is still hasn’t changed any at all.

I’m still catching them on shallow secondary ledges leading out of the
bays. Also I am catching them on main lake ledges.

Most of the secondary ledges leading out to the main river channel are
topping out from 8 foot then dropping off into 15 to 20 foot depths.
The depths really can vary right now. Fish are migrating out to the
main river ledge for the summer. This just takes work.

My main lake ledges I’m fishing are 15 foot on top and dropping off
into 20 to 25 foot.

Use your lake maps and GPS mapping to find these areas. Look for bait,
and shell beds. One key ingredient here is the current. It makes all
the difference in the world. If the current is present then the fish
will be on a feed. If not it’s just slow.

If there is current a strike king 6XD ,jig and im also getting a few
fish on the Zoom ole Monster worm in Plum on some of my areas. Some of
my bigger fish are coming off swim baits though! I am just working the
jig and swim bait along the bottom.

The retrieve of my crankbait will vary. I am slow cranking it along
the bottom kicking up the bottom, I will also burn it for 5 feet then
pause it for a second then burn it another 5 feet then pause it. I am
using 12lb test BPS Fluorocarbon and a 7ft 8 inch Rick Clunn Wright
McGill glass Cranking rod.

The jigs is a ¾ ounce football style that I make myself (Kentucky Lake
Pro Lures) in a green pumpkin /watermelon, with a few strands of
chartreuse. I am using a ZOOM Fat Albert twin tail for the trailer,
Green Pumpkin and peanut butter and jelly. I am fishing the jig on a
7ft graphite rod and 14lb BPS Fluorocarbon.

One note I want to make here: If you catch a few fish on your
crankbait, be sure to throw that jig in there before you leave, many
times I will catch a few fish cranking, then I’ll throw the jig in the
same spot and catch 10 or more from that same area. I have done this a
lot this past week.

Scott Patton Kentucky Lake Fishing Report: 6-2-12

The lake is approximately 2ft below summer pool- 357.50

Water Temp is holding near 77-80

You will want to navigate with caution. If you don’t know the water,
please idle if you are out of the channel buoys.

If you’re planning on fishing Kentucky Lake this coming week, you will
be able to find fish still shallow in the grass and also secondary
ledges and main lake ledges.

Shallow water pattern:

My better shallow water pattern is looking for bass fry with a
spinnerbait in the scattered grass clumps. I am fishing shallow ridges
on the south end of the lake. Concentrating on bars and ridges, in
areas that the bass would have spawned in, if the water had been up in
the bushes This spring.

What has happened is the water never flooded the buck brush so the
bass used these shallow ridges to spawn in 2 to 4 ft depths. One of
the main ingredients is the scattered grass patches. NOT the areas
that is just full of grass. You need grass clumps! A lot of these
areas will fall into 8 to 10 feet of water.

I am taking the spinnerbait and fishing it near the surface trying to
spook the fry, they will scatter and if you find this there is a bass
there guarding them.

A lot of the fish will hit the spinnerbait, So use a trailer hook you
will get a lot of short strikes because the fish are trying to protect
the fry. They may not be in a feeding mode!

I am also fishing a worm, jig, or baby brush hog. If you spook the fry
with the spinnerbait and the fish doesn’t strike, flip one of the
following baits around the area. This will normally get the fish to
bite. You will want to make repeated cast to a grass clump if you spook
fry, remember they are guarding their young. If you make repeated cast
they will feel the threat and eat/kill what is making the threat!

Ledge Pattern:

I’m still catching them on shallow secondary ledges leading out of the
bays. Also I am catching them on main lake ledges.

Most of the secondary ledges leading out to the main river channel are
topping out from 8 foot then dropping off into 15 to 20 foot depths.
The depths really can vary right now. Fish are migrating out to the
main river ledge for the summer. This just takes work; I am on the
water continuously looking for fish.

If there is current a strike king 6XD and a jig are working best for
me. Some of my bigger fish are coming off swim baits though!

Scott Patton Kentucky Lake Fishing Report: 5-24-12

The lake is approximately 2ft below summer pool- 357.50

Water Temp is holding near 75-77

You will want to navigate with caution. If you don’t know the water
please idle if you are out of the channel buoys.

Bass are out on the ledges of course, some of them are in groups but
then they are also scattered fish. With the water below this year a
lot of the main lake ledges are very shallow i have found fish in
areas i haven’t fished before due to the water level, I believe. Some
of my areas that would have 7ft of water on top of the ledge now only
have 5ft and on down the ladder. I have been able to catch fish on top
water early and late in the day. Normally I am fishing near the
shallow drops with grass present. One blessing out of this low water
this year along with an early Spring is that the grass has done very
well. We have had the right conditions for the lake to make a comeback
with Grass. This is great news for Kentucky lake fishing I am finding
huge grass beds again, the further south you go from Paris the more
abundant the grass is. We will have a great summer and an awesome fall
this year due to this. Look out Top water and rattletraps!

But for now a guy will need to focus on the 10ft to 14ft drops. My
best areas have had grass up on the flats then the drop. Also a shell
bed sure makes things better. I have found some HUGE schools of Bass
Cruising along these breaks and feeding on the shad. It’s really been
an awesome week. My best lures are a Strike king 6XD sexy shad or KVD
color,,Ha!

You will want a swim bait also, to fish along the bottom and ZOOMS New
Magnum Ole Monster 12 inch worms Plum-Apple seems to be doing the
best with California 420 ranking 2nd, I’m fishing this on 14 to 17 lb
BPS Fluorocarbon

I’m cranking with Rick Clunns Wright McGill 7ft 8inch cranking rod on
12lb BPS fluorocarbon, XD Strike King crank bait, sexy shad and Citrus
shad Crankbait.

If you want to fish shoreline you can still catch some fish by fishing
the 8 to 10 ft points leading out of the spawning bays. My best
recommendations for that are a ZOOM finesse worm on 6lb test
fluorocarbon, ¼ ounce lead head. Green Pumpin, water melon and water
melon magic. A slow dragging presentation will get more bites, fish
it slow in these key areas a lot of fish will simply take the bait
while letting it sit still.
