School violence is a scary thing for a lot of parents, but I think even the most cautious would have to agree that some common sense should be applied as well. These zero tolerance laws are often flawed. Hopefully this boy can get something worked out.
Different time.
I took a KY black power rifle and pistol AND black powder to my World Affairs class in High School in 1981. My teach knew I was into hunting, and asked if I had done black powder before.
I told him yea.......and he asked me to bring some stuff it.
It was EDUCATIONAL.........
People are stupid today.

Speech class, freshman year of high school:
We were individually assigned to give a speech and a demonstration of our choosing.
I brought in my .22 rifle and demonstrated proper scope alignment, various uses of the sling, and a short weapons safety talk. Got an A+
Yeah some people just go over the top crazy while enforcing laws or rules. Just sad that common sense is lost on so many people these days.....especially when it comes to schools.
i had ROTC in 9th grade and we shot .22 rifles at target that were basically against the gym wall. Yeah there were small soil backstops but if we had an idiot who wanted to shoot toward the cars or other members they could have. They could have shot anyone within eye sight but that never happened. I loved it because I got to lay next to Pamela who was well developed she was purty.but anyway no problems at all with guns in school back then. This was in Goose Creek South Carolina.
I think a lot of this type of thing is the result of so many lawsuits these days. If anything bad happens everyone gets in line with their attorneys for their pay day. So in the past where the police officer (or whomever did the search) would have used common sense, pulled the kid aside and told him not to bring that on school property in the future, instead he now thinks if I don't follow the law to the letter and report him, and he ever ended up hurting someone with the knife, I will be sued. The same goes for the school district, local prosecuting attorney etc. Everyone covers their hide even if it means throwing the occasional innocent person under the bus as a result.
I think a lot of problems in school today is because we stopped allowing corporal punishment. When I was in school and got blistered by a teacher, I generally got blistered at home too, and then had to apologize to the teacher, IN FRONT of the class, or I would have been blistered again.I think a lot of this type of thing is the result of so many lawsuits these days. I got in trouble in school but I stayed ahead of them.
Amen to this^^^^^^same here! Heck its so bad now that if you do spank your child at home or God forbid in public your opening yourself up to problems. If I needed to swat my oldest on the butt to get her attitude adjusted a little when she was a kid I took her to an area without people watching, most of the time it only took a warning or two of what was coming and not the actual swat...I just don't need some nosy do-gooder in my business because that wouldn't go over well.I think a lot of problems in school today is because we stopped allowing corporal punishment.
