    American Blackout

Any of you all watched this thing on Nat Geo called "American Blackout"..??

It's a 2 hour deal about the potential fallout from the US power grid failing. It's filmed like different first hand cell phone videos, which is interesting. It's like a documentary fiction, looking back as if the event actually happened.

I've got to say, it scares the hell out of me. I'm not one of those "prepper" guys, but this makes a fellow think about backup power, food, and water supply for his family...and ability to hunker down, deal with unrest, etc.

Gotta admit, it makes me want to dedicate some space in the basement to stockpile crap.

How long could you guys be sufficient if power, gas, food, and water wasn't available for the foreseeable future? And for those if you that have it, how could you keep others that are desperate for it from taking it?

Of course, the businessman in me finds it awfully "convenient" that at every commercial there is an Ad for 25-year sealed food supply from Wise Industries.

I could go a few days on bottled water and longer on food. I have plenty of matches for boiling water in case that's needed. I can hunt and fish so that's an option As well.

As far as protecting what I have...I'm good.

The thing that bothers me the most is what if I'm away from home on business or vacation and the poop hits the fan?? Now your really out on your own. That's where any survival skills, self preservation skills, thinking on your feet skills and self awareness comes to be the most important tools you have.

i would like a nice Honda Generator though. Just for the power outages we have had and or could have from ice storms and such. Those suckers are $1000 or more but they are quiet and very fuel efficient. You need the right one to power things like your fridge, small AC window units, radio and TV's as well but they can be used while turning other things off. Just have to do the power calculations to see what you need.

On a side note......The best advice is to go to cities like Chicago and New York because those are gun free zones so you will be safe at least that's what I have been told...guns are not allowed to be used there since it's against the law so bring your knife.....in case a law abiding meanie wants something your have...

could be the BEST thing to happen

Not that I want any of that, but a good ole meltdown is bound to weed out a few Liberal FOOLS who do nothing to contribute to our great society.

What I found interesting about the documentary is that even the guy who prepped to the extreme in the Colorado countryside got screwed in the end by a group of armed locals looking for food who ganged up on him and his family at their home/compound.

    Talk about collapse of society.

No doubt you would have to band with others who you trust...some family, neighbors and friends. Kinda like the way The Walking Dead plays out......the group with the smarts, resources and firepower should be safer.

theres so many people, that can't do anything for themself. hire everything done. they would just panic and die like flies after a week or so. it's something to think about for sure.

I like the Documentary, about after every person on earth is killed off. it shows how the roads and homes just fall apart after a number of years, then it fast forwards another 50 years or so. after about 500 years or so, nothing left to show man was ever here except for what was built with stone. if you haven't seen it, check it out.

I wonder about what kind of "response" if one was even capable, the United States would use. I suspect all out war on WHOEVER caused the cyber outage.

I suspect China and North Korea would be first on my mind, and then after that Russia, and then after that, maybe Drug Cartels with "help". Finally, after that, maybe Terrorists backed by Middle Eastern money.

Man, I watched again, and I will tell ya. It REALLY honks me off about the kid giving food to the neighbors. He risked the entire family, who prepared for the end.

It drives home the FACT that in that type of situation you're ON YOUR OWN. I'm sorry, but I'm not helping anyone and will put a bullet into anyone wanting to help themselves.........

so your saying, if someone new you had food, and with no power and water, everyone would have to go, to the woods or a outhouse out back. and this someone watched for you to come out to the little brown shack out back, to do your business. and bushwhacked you and took all the food you had, and left your wife and children without a bite to eat.... you think your neighbor that may have some food, should turn your hungry kids away, when they ask for a small piece of bread or something. just tell them, sorry kids your on your own, and if they are so hungry they try and reach for something to eat. you think the neighbor with food should, put a bullet in your hungry wife and kids.

I have two buddies that are ready. They have everything hoarded you can possibly imagine. They are educated hard working successful people but have got themselves in position to last months without help from others.

Is it crazy, I laugh at them sometime but then I think, what if they are right? Of course they would take me in with my small arsenal and we could work as a team.....

I pray it never comes to this and it's very hard for me to believe that it ever could even with that dumbarse we have running the country.

We could survive here for several days. I did have the house rewired so it can run off a small generator. I can't run the AC and stuff like that but lights, stove, microwave (wife's favorite way to cook) will work just fine.
