Prepping for my Next KY Trip 03/28/2014

Man, I'm dying. I'm sure this weather slowed them down a little, but I think the patterns I was fishing a couple weeks ago will still be holding.

Crankbaits on leadin banks.........shakey head and jigs where necessary.

I'd SURE love to get in on that red eye shad bite. Hopefully it is going.

No matter, I'm locked and loaded.............

Anyone going to be back down this this weekend?

I'm headed down today after work or early tomorrow morning.

Man, I CANNOT wait. Hopefully it warms up nicely and the fish are hungry

Oh, and I purchased about 6 billion new baits ,

    Hey Geo..

Sorry we didn't get a hold of you two weeks ago. With the snow storm rolling in on Sunday we headed out late Saturday night. Fishing was ok. Caught a couple of fish in the 3lb-3.5lb range. One on a crankbait and a nice smallmouth on a jig. Fishing was better on Friday (really windy on KY lake) while I was fishing a crankbait. Fish would hit the bait within 5 feet of the bank. Then the wind stopped on Saturday and I could not get bit with the crankbait. I kept thinking that the fish would rise once the rocks warmed later in the day but they never came up. My buddy did much better than me the second day. He only threw the jig and was catching the fish in about 8-12 feet of water.

Late Friday I thought that I had a couple of hogs back to back on the crankbait. Turned out to be a 10 and 6lb drum . Fun fight though when you think you have a 10lb bass on 8lb line.

    Friday we had 26.
    Sunday we had 20.

I am not going to make it back out with the wife being prego. But good luck to you. They may start to hit the red eye in the backs of bays soon. Every warm day the fishing should get better as more fish move off of the main lake humps and into the creeks.

    Just Back

    Hey,

I just got back from my Last March KY lake trip.

Nothing spectacular but we did managed good numbers every day. We only fished for 3 hrs today.

Friday, we got to the lake late, so only managed a few fish. Caught fish on North Barkley and had a solid 4.3 lb largemouth of a shallow water hump. FUN. Caught a few others Friday, but not many. Again, we were only out for a couple hrs friday.

Saturday, the North wind was brutal. WE put in at Sugar Bay and stayed there all day. Managed a bunch of fish on Crankbaits. Caught a couple on Red Eye Shad too. Also caught a few on jigs and shakey heads. Had 13lbs of fish of a 5 fish limit. Weather never got above 44, and water temps hovered around 50.

Sunday. Threw the tar out of the crankbait. I caught 14 on the Crank. Ended up with 32 total, with a 4.5 , 3.8, 3.3, and a few other keepers. One of the guys struggled until the end of the day, where he ended up rallying using a Shakey Head. He caught 10 fish with 3 keepers in the last hour before dark. That was fun. Andy caught the 4.5 on a Jig of a magic spot a little birdie told me about . BTW......Dave Stewart's fishing report is spot on.

Monday, we only had a few hours so we went up into North Barkley to a favorite spot and manged 11 fish in 2 hrs. 2 would have kept, but barely. Those were caught on tubes and crankbaits.

Man, I'm dying. I think I might try to go next weekend too...........

    Geo

Man there must be a groove in the pavement between your house and Kentucky Lake you have been making the trip a lot this spring. Glad you had another good time.

Let me ask you some advise. I think I am going to Barkley next Monday for three or four days staying at the State Park there on "Little River". I have fished KY, but never Barkley and I doubt we will go out to the main lake at all. Did you happen to fish in Little River at all? How far in do you think they might be from the main lake at this point? I have a friend driving about 7 hours to meet me and I want him to at least get into a few fish. Are any fish on the banks yet? Thanks

I've never been to the Little River Area, but I bet you should be able to find fish moving to shallow flats . They were starting to over the last couple days, and I bet if you threw the TAR out of a crankbait, you'd catch some fish. Crawfish patterns are working for me.

I had 4 rods tied up with crankbaits. I had a Shad Rap, a DT4, DT6 and flat max. I rotated those all day yesterday and today. Others in my boat were throwing other stuff, so I stuck with the crankbait most of the day. You should catch a fish........It is only getting better.

With regards to how far they are? There are always community fish in most of the areas I fish, so if the fish are biting you should catch some. Those community fish are not the size generally, but if you're just fun fishin, it sure makes it easy to stay in an area, and eek out a few.

If I was tourney fishing, I might fish completely differently than I do. As it is, I generally am always fun fishing, and if I catch a giant with a few dozen smaller fish, that is a GOOD DAY.

If the guys I'm fishin want to drop a hundred bucks a day in gas, I will do that too, but most times they don't want to spend that kind of smack looking for fish .

And with regards to a path.......yea I've been fortunate to be able to fish so much this year. I didn't fish much this winter due to the weather, so I saved my days and money, and added a couple more KY trips. I generally try to get 6-8 weekends a spring, and I usually take 1/2 day Thursday and all day Friday on those weekends. If the guys I'm going with can add Monday, we usually try to make than an option if possible......

I don't fish June, July, or August. If September looks to be HOT, I usually skip September too. If things start getting colder in September then I start adding trips for the Fall. I try do get 6 or 8 trips in the Fall, it just depends. This year, I might not do Dale hollow in the Late Fall/Early Winter, and may add 3 trips to KY for a total of 8-11..........

    Yea, I'm ATE UP.

Thanks a lot for the advise I really appreciate it. I guess if it comes to it we can also always trailer the boat to some other spots if we don't have any luck there. Any good places you would recommend on Barkley to trailer to and launch from?

Why don't you fish at all during the summer months? Is it because of the heat, the crowds, or the slow bite?
