    Patoka summer patterns

Hey guys, I am heading to Patoka this weekend and I want to catch some bass. Let me saw that I'm a rookie and have a hard time catching fish on Patoka. With a family and daughter in fast pitch softball I only get to get out a few times a year so its hard for my to keep up with the fishing. Usually I just beat the banks and luck into 1 or 2. I am not asking for secret spots but any info on how to fish this time of year or where or what to look for, any specific lures? guys I am just a guy with a boat and a old dad that wants to spent time on the lake with his son, oh and would like to finally catch some fish.

    Thanks!

Just throw a texas rigged worm on the edges of the grass. You should be able to catch some bass. Grass and bass are everywhere on the main lake.

Do a google search for an article titled, "Out on a ledge" by Dave Stewart. It is written for Kentucky Lake, but it works just as well on Patoka. I'm heading there for all of next week. For bass I will either live or die by his philosophy. Try carolina rigged baits in 12-25 feet on the river channel drops. I also have become a fan of the 5 inch sexy spoon. You can youtube search how to fish it in deep water. I'd start right next to the island at the Newton Stewart Boat Ramp and keep moving out from the island until you find fish. Good luck, and keep us posted.

Buck Perry wrote that long before Dave.

The father of modern day structure fishing is the late Professor Buck Perry. His book on spoon plugging is the predecessor to what Dave's teaching today. It's what's taught by the guys at In-Fisherman Magazine and it was one of the highlights of the Fishing Facts Magazine of the 1970s.

The first time I tried to drag a spoon plug around the drop offs (Creek Channel and River Ledges) I hooked into a huge Largemouth Black Bass in less than 5 minutes. He got off before I got him into the boat but I saw him jump about three time and he came completely out of the water. I hooked him along the bottom at the intersection of the old Tennessee River Channel and a Creek on the East side of the lake just north of the Cypress Bay area. I think it was Piney Creek but I'm not sure it was one of the creeks on the same side of the River in that general area. This was sometime after I read about Buck Perry's Spoon plugs. I used a deep sea reel and lead core line to get the bait down to the bottom in 20 ft. of water. Buck was right about where the big bass hang out and I checked his method myself to see if it worked. It worked great. If I had a bigger boat I'd be out on the main lake more often. But my old Fisher Maine Bass Boat is not really designed to take on the waves of KY lake unless it's dead calm. Which is what it was like the day I hooked into that huge LM Bass. Just be careful with the spoon plugs as they don't float. They are made out of metal and sink like a rock and if they get hung up on a stump they can be lost easily.

Don't get me wrong as what Dave teaches is good stuff and he knows how to fish KY lake. But he didn't invent this stuff. It's been well know by many before him. They just didn't all tell everyone their secrets. Now you see a lot more bass boats out fishing the main lake ledges that you saw in the past.
