Mainly due to cabin fever I fished at least once every month of last year. Almost always caught at least one or two, usually on suspending jerkbaits or jigs.

this is my first time fishing in this area through the cold winter. what typically happens with the fishing? Does it stop? I typically just fish small lakes/creeks within an hour of Lexington on my kayak, usually targeting bass. I plan to go to trout once they start stocking around me, but can I stay on the bass?

Yes, in Central Ky most years the lakes don't freeze over until Late January. You can target bass. Fish slow and deep.
I like to throw a silver buddy or a jiggin spoon. Find the shad, the fish will be there.

Make some trips to Dale Hollow and Cumberland.....maybe Laurel River.
Also the Cumberland River or Dix River. Lots and lots of places to get your fishing fix when it is winter time.
January and February I like to chase they walleye on the nolin river and really like fishing below locks and dams for sauger but I catch largemouth with cranks more often than I catch the walleye
You can catch em shallow all winter at Rough, Nolin, and Barren. Jigs and no. 7 shadraps are always safe bets. Cold sunny days can be phenomenal
