Train dumps coal in Stoner Creek

About 4 cars derailed early this morning with three of them sitting in the creek full of coal. One actually hit the dam as it fell over the embankment.

Hate to see this stuff happen. It seems the railroad would have noticed the erosion going on there, especially that close to water.

Raw coal shouldn't have much of an effect. I'm sure the EPA will require the coal be extracted as much as it possibly can be. Since it was raw coal and not ash or refuse I don't see it being too harmful. Obviously, it's not good. But Coal is just a rock and shouldn't be too much of a problem. I know below Cumberland falls you can find coal all over the banks from where it naturally washes out of the hillside.

Charcoal is often used as a filter for water so maybe a coal spill won't be too harmful.

I'm pretty sure that I heard on the news that the EPA had already deemed the coal a non issue. Hopefully they still get it cleaned up in a timely manner.
