Pump for water in bait tank

I've heard of some guys on Cumberland using a pump to get water from 25 ft.+ for bait tanks once the surface temps start to get warm to keep shad alive.

Can anyone direct me to the type of pump I would need? I've only used the kind that push the water, not pull. Those kind have the battery clips where the pump is so they can't be submerged deep enough to use for this purpose.

we use submersible sump pumps, you will need really good batteries and a high quality inverter.
40 feet of hose will get 58 degree water right now. get the self priming type of pump if you can, priming by yourself at 2am is a pain.

keep in mind when you fill your bait tank you will also have to fill your holding tank that you dump the net into when you bring it up, if you bring the bait up from that deep and then dump it into 85 degree water you will knock the crap out of them instantly.

right now on a 40 gallon bait tank i would mix about 10 gallons of surafce water and 30 gallons of deep water and try to shoot for a temp in the mid 60s. this temp will let you get bait out of the tank, on the hook and in the water and through the hot surface layer without stunning them to bad, but dont waste any time getting them below the top 15 foot layer.

Thanks stripernut. Do you have any additional specifics on the pump you use? Brand/name/store you bought it at/etc? The majority of what I'm seeing that fits your description has the standard electrical cord and no option for batteries.

Maybe that is what the inverter is for? To convert 12v from the batteries to 110 to run your pump?

I use a similar pump to Stripernut. It's a low cost submersible AC pump you can find at any big box hardware store. I use mine in my slip so no DC\AC conversion. If I were going battery, I would use the same 500-1000 GPH pump as I use in colder months, except I would add 50 ft of hose and wire to it. Pumps are rated by how far they can pump above the waterline. So it doesn't matter as much how far you go down, it only matters how high you pump above the waterline.

Research water proof heat shrink so you can safely power the pump with the added electrical wire that will be required.

Another option, if you have the ability to have a stationary place to pump is to install 50 ft of 1.5" PVC only the bottom of a bucket and mount that in the slip. As you pump water out of the bucket, the PVC will pull water from 50 ft down into the bucket. This way you don't need added hose or electrical connections.

I appreciate the input. The electrical cord issue was what i was having trouble with....never thought of heat shrink.

Unfortunately, don't have a slip so will need to figure something else out. Thanks again.

Get a longe piece of hose, tubing or whatever, hang something on one end heavy enough to sink it,get you one of those drill powered pump from harbor freight, hook to cordless drill, they pump pretty good, your not pumping from 40 feet ,your pumping just from surface, pysics will keep the pipe full from the bottm, this is clear as mud I know, your getting cool water from deep but only pumping it from the surface and up

oh boy! never thought of using the drill pump for that purpose! i have one that i used to pump the water off the pool cover and they are pretty effective pumps.
we usually pump deep cold water at the slip but on occasion we will pump deep water at the place we are catching bait to avoid disturbing the slip neighbors, its quiet enough but it keeps things to a minimum if we just push off and troll away from the bedroom window next door.
the drill method would be great. i am going to try it asap

Probably have to hold the drill next to surface to get it going, then pull up to Hubbell any keep drilling
