OK we all know this happens to us. But how to they do it and how to we stop them?
Yesterday I went to a web site to check out some pants and shirts which I might buy in the future. No big deal right? Wrong. Now every other web site I go to is showing me adds on their web page that directs me back to the other site that I was looking at the pants on.
To be specific. I was looking for some of those Deluth Trading Company pants and now ever web site I visit is showing me ads for Deluth Trading Company Products.
Yeas it's cookies. I use CCleaner to get rid of all the cookies on my computer from time to time. But this targeted advertising is bugging me.
Just because we visit a web site should not give the web site permission to see where we have been and to read cookies that someone else put on our computers. I can see where it can be of benefit but it's also an invasion of our privacy. I think of it like someone sneaking into my house and leaving ad flyers for some of their products based on seeing where I went shopping yesterday in my car. As if they put a GPS tracker on my car and followed me to Best Buy and then snuck into my house and put a ad for Best Buy on my TV set. Advertizers are already sneaking enough the way it is now. Have you hear of subliminal message on TV? They are put into the screen for a split second where your conscious brain doesn't take notices of them. But your subconscious brain sees and remembers them. My cousin did a term paper on this subject many years ago when he was still in school. Today he is retired from the US Navy and was a Lt Commander when he retired. He also made admiral.
