Johnson 88 SPL....?

I have a Johnson 88 Spl and have always had a couple of questions concerning the motor.


1) Why the off number hp rating?

2) What makes it so SPeciaL?

Also, if you know anything about these motors what is your general impression and are there any typical maintenance problems you have encountered?

Just curious and thought I would ask.

I have a 88 SPL johnson. I really like mine. I have heard different reasons for the off hp rating, but not sure. I will ask around and see what I come up with.

Thanks... There for a while I though I had a one of a kind Johnson. I was about to donate it to the Smithsonian because it was so unique. Any information you can come up with would be appreciated.

does your 88 spl have power tilt and trim? i could be mistaken on this but i think i have been told the only difference in the 88 spl and the 90 hp is the 90 hp has the tilt and trim and the 88spl does not.
