I'm a new boat owner and had what may be a stupid question to ask you more experienced guys. I'm wanting to upgrade my trolling motor from the 12v low power that is on there now to a higher power one in the 60 to 70 lb range. To do that I need to change to 24 volt. How do I do that? Right now I've got a single deep cycle for my trolling motor and accesories and another to crank the motor as well as a charger. If Switching to 24 volt means that I just add another battery do I have to worry about the charger or other accessories not operating? Thanks for the help. Ted
Not stupid at all.
I don't know all the specifics, and you may need to talk to a pro... for the exact details. I know I would have to hire it out to be done.
But you will need to have two trolling motor batteries. I know on my boat, all accessories are run off my cranking battery, and my TM batteries only run my Minnkota Maxum 74 lb. thrust.
You will get a much more efficient motor using a 24 volt. I would love to upgrade to 36 volt myself.
Now the TM batteries have to be hooked together in series, I think that is what it is called. Then you will likely have to have bigger wires running to the front of the boat to handle the heavier load. Also, and this has happened both times I have bought a boat, the plug that the TM uses to plug in, must be wired to be a 24v plug, or else it will only pul 12v. Imagine getting a new boat, taking it to the lake when you pick it up, have 74 lb thrust, and dropping your tm and stepping on the switch.... and boom... nothing. LOL the dealer fixed it in about 15 minutes, but dang it was a bummer.
Good luck... oh and don't add a new battery with the old one. You will need to replace the old one, so both batteries are new.
Let us know what you do.
Danny
