    Kentucky Lake Temperature Question

How much warmer would the water temperature be, between Big Sandy and Jonathon Creek on avrage. I see that the water temps on Kentucky Lake is 61 degrees, and 59 degrees at the dam. I also read that the temps in Big Sandy are in the 64-66 degree range. How many mile are between the two lakes? Coming down the last week in April. Hoping to have a multi species fishing trip. Crappie, Bass, Bluegill, and Catfish. Can that be done?

    RE: Kentucky Lake Temperature Question

The distance between Big Sandy and Jonathan is roughly 35 miles give or take a mile or two. The temps do vary in the springtime when the water is warming up as Big Sandy is further south...the temp varience between the two depends on weather patterns for sure and can be the close to the same or as much as 4 or 5 degrees difference. When looking at water temps for stages of where the fish should be for a seasonal pattern one must look at what the water temps are the first thing in the morning at first light....this is prevailing water temps. Many times water temps reported by various agencies are taken at diffent times of the day...obviously on a very warm spring day the water temp in the late morning or afternoon is going to vary a lot from what is was that morning depending on wind direction, location, water depth and clarity.
To answer your question about a multi species trip...here is what my log history shows for your trip period:
Bass: Good fishing on late prespawn and spawn patterns.
Bluegill and Shellcrackers: Good, these fish should be moving up to prespawn and spawn patterns.
Catfish: They will either be staging in the creeks or moving onto the shallow rocky areas to spawn...fishing can be fair to good.
Crappie: Mostly post spawn patterns with some late spawners...you should have a good chance at some fair to good fishing.

    RE: Kentucky Lake Temperature Question

Thanks Dave for all your help. I've been making the five hour + drive from Cincinnati for the past thirty years now. Two to four times a year. Early April, early July, August, and early October. First time for late April. There no other place like it. Seven more years and I'll be there for good. No more driving. Thanks again and take care.
