    Using a GPS

I have a hand held Garmin Legend GPS unit. It seems to me that when I try to find a waypoint that I have marked it takes me in the opposite direction. I gave about $240 for the thing a few years ago and have not used it effectively. Does anyone know the trick for this contraption?

I think the compass is moving around rather than the line that points to where you need to go. In other words if I know I am facing North it may be pointing North at another direction. What gives?

    Thanks

    RE: Using a GPS

I am not familiar with your unit, but on mine, you can have several different orientations of the screen. You can set the screen so that what ever direction you are moving is always toward the top of the screen or you can set it so that North is always at the top. There are other settings too, just don't remember them.

Do you have your book? As bad as I hate to admit it, sometimes I have to resort to reading the directions. LOL

    Good luck,

    Danny

I have a Legend. go to main menu-go to find-waypoints- choose nearest or by name- highlight the waypoint you want-go to. the unit will tell you which way to go how far away you are and when you should arrive...Hope this helps.

Perhaps you need to calibrate your compass?

    RE: Using a GPS

I think Danny's response is on the right track. Your GPS is likely not reading "track up." It's probably reading "north up." So while you may be heading south, the GPS is oriented on the screen towards north....that would make the direction you think you should be going the opposite of what if feels.

According to the manual on the Garmin website, you should go to OPTIONS in your menu, and choose "Track Up." That way, whichever way you are headed will always be displayed at the top end of the GPS display. Then when you choose a waypoint to go to, it will point you in the correct direction relative to your current bearing.
