    Rough River Lake Crappie

I'm planning a trip to Rough River Lake about mid-week and was wanting to do a little crappie fishing. Can someone please tell me whether the fish are spawning yet. I haven't been to Rough on a weekday before, so I'm hoping the fishing will be good. Does anybody know the water temperature? I've been to the Army Corp. sight but it hasn't been updated in a while. Thanks for any help you can give!

I fished Nolin this weekend and they were not spawned out yet and the water temp[ was in the mid 60's. I would expect Rough would be about the same. All our fish were full of eggs and we didn't catch many on the banks at all. God luck

Thanks for the reply! Were you fishing structure? I was also wondering, don't crappie spawn earlier at Barkley and Kentucky than they do at Rough or Nolin?

    RE: Rough River Lake Crappie

I fished Rough yesterday and didn't have a lot of luck. I saw a lot of guys catching little crappie using minnows but I usually troll jigs or crank baits looking for larger crappie.

I will be honest, yesterday my son and I focused more on casting jigs working on his casting techniques. The crappie were not shallow and still were full of eggs. The temperature was 67 so I was very shocked that they hadn't spawned.

I do believe Barkley and KY Lakes craapie spawn earlier then here because they are more southern then Rough River.

    Good luck,

    Jigboy

    RE: Rough River Lake Crappie

We were mostly fishing around stick ups and brush 4 to 6 feet deep. I was really surprised that they were not starting to come up shallow with the water temps coming up so fast. That may have been part of the problem. Last week we were fishing in coveralls and this week I got sunburnt. We caught a few that went over 13 inches though. Averaged about 20 keepers per day, but worked hard for them.
