Well, fishing was fishing, not catching... at least not until late in the day.
We got there and had to wait out a tough storm.. then the wind howled like a howling monkey.
The water was mostly stained and in the very low 70's. Although I did not check the water levels, it appeared a little over summer pool.
We fished hard and we fished the wind... nothing. Every spot where we have been successful... nothing. The good news is that we found hydrylla.. or I guess that is the type grass it was, in a lot of new places.
After being totally unsucessful in the bays, we decided to try some humps, ledges, and mid lake cover. Man, in that wind, although we only fished for about 1/2 hour, it felt like three hours or longer. Thank goodness I wore sandles. There was no way to keep the feet dry!!!
Finally we decided to get out of the wind and head to the LBL side. We pulled in, and guess what, the wind changed to becoming straight out of the west... we were back in the wind. Still we fished those bays, and started having luck. We first caught some dinks back in the shallow cover, just trying everything, then I switched to CRing a tube. I think that was the key, we started getting bit. My partner DEW switched to a tube also, right after I had a beautiful smallie come off right at the boat.
DEW figured a little something out. We were on the last main point back in the bay, and we found grass, hydrilla, growing out away from the point in about 14 or so feet of water. We would work our CR through the grass, and as it came free to the hard bottom, we found that we would get the bite. We left them biting as we wanted to make sure we were home before the afternoon severe weather forecast. As it turned out, we could have fished several more hours.
Now for my chatterbait review.... LOVED the feel. I was fishing a 3/8 oz chatterbait, and it was by far the best "thump" I have ever fished. Had a very great feel, and you could tell the minute something changed. I got only one bite though. Something hit it and just stopped it completely dead for a split second... then nothing. I would suggest a trailer hook. I have to say, I think it will be better later this summer when the shad start schooling in the bays and swim it under the school, but it was fun. You can cast it a mile.. I used the 3/8 oz model. And talk about weedless, at least without a trailer hook. I was trying to cast right next to buck brush lining an old creek channel. I had to make a long cast with wind... yep, the wind took it right into the heart of the buck brush. I got that bait back easily. I threw it into the most knawly stuff imaginable, and never lost it, thankfully....LOL. I don't normally buy $6 lures, but I have to say, I loved it.
I got mine at Uncle Lee's, and they had four colors in 1/4 and 3/8 oz sizes. The colors they had were brown, green pumpkin, chartruese, and a translucent with blue strands. I bought three colors, left the brown on the shelf. That will probably turn out to be the best color...LOL
Hope this helps.... look for grass growing off the points and CR tubes. I used Prowler green pumpkin, dipped in chartruese.
Good luck... and if this were a commercial you would have to read about my rod, reel, line, and boat...LOL
