Has anyone tried this type of thermal underwear. I have had a lot of people tell me that it works really well in the cold weather. It's made out of nylon type material. Any advice before I spend the $$$$ for this stuff?????

LAST EDITED ON Dec-07-05 AT 08:45PM (EST)[p]It works...got a pair as a gift and have bought two more sets myself since. It is alot less bulky and does a better job IMO. Gotta recommend not wearing it in the truck on the way to the lake though...it will burn you up.

It or the Polartec Expedition is well worth the money. It is the best stuff I found for keeping moisture off of you and heat in. Cotton gets wet when your loading and unloading gear. When you cool down, you freeze.
The Polartec is sold at Bass Pro. I would imagine that the prices of it or Under Armor are about the same. They are both expensive. Bass Pro also has their brand of the same stuff much cheaper. ..$42.00 for a set vs $140.00 for the Polartec. I haven't tried the Bass Pro brand yet to see if it works.
Thermal's don't work nearly as well as underarmour. I know because I load and unload aircraft for Delta all day out in the cold. It is WELL worth the money. I swear by it now and it is very comfortable to wear and move around in.
I've had a set of under armor for two years now and love it. Make sure you try it on before you buy. If it is too loose, it wont work. It should fit like a second skin.
Do they shrink like my longjohns do. I have never had a pair of xl that didnt turn into mediums. How about the armour do you buy it big also?
I have a set and they work great. If you need anything to put on top of it and you probally won't!!! use wool it wicks moisture and retains heat when wet. You can get a wool sweater from cabellas for 30.00 and wool gloves and socks at wal-mart for around 15.00 a set.
Be sure if you get the wool gloves get the ones with the fingers cut out of the ends and the magnetic grips on the palm.
I have seen this type of cold weather underwear at Dick's Sporting Goods store. It's rather expensive though.
Now I am aware of how manmade fibers are waterproof. Cotton fibers get wet and won't insulate when they get wet. Polypropylene, polyester and polyethylene fibers all repell moisture.
I have several pairs of long johns that are blends of synthetic fibers and they all keep me pretty warm. I wore a pair of synthetic long johns while playing ice hockey years ago. Now you talk about sweating and moisture while out in the cold air. They got wet so they must have been a blend of cotton and synthetic fabric.
I have read that the way the fabric is made can made a difference. ie the way the fabric is weaved together can help wick moisture away from the skin. This is expecially important if you have a set of long underwear that is made of blended fabrics. The weave helps not only wick the moisture away from the skin but it helps to trap air to insulate and retain the heat.
I have gone to wearing a lot of Thinsulate Insulated outgarmens. These are also made of plastic fibers that are scredded to give it more loft and to help trap air without getting wet. I use to wear down coats but I have switched to the Thinsulate type garmets over the last ten years.
I use to do a lot of ice skating and my down coat would get soaking wet. I wore one of the first Thinsulate jackets that Cabelas came out with years ago and it kept me warm and dry.
So my question is this. Is the weave pattern of the Armorwear any different than the polypropylene underwear sold at walmart?

Hey Guy's Thanks for the info. I think my question was answered very well. Time to Buy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I recently bought a set of the Under Armour cold gear just before the modern gun season. I bought it at Dick's and it is expensive, but in my opinion you get what you pay for. Somebody mentioned the walmart type. It is great for mild to cool weather, but it doesn't compare to the under armour in cold weather. I also bought the socks as well. The "UA" is 2 sided and that is what makes the difference between the others, and I would assume that is what runs up the cost. Hope this helps.
