i hear they are getting shallower,i crappie fish like i bass fish, put on a grub on a 16th oz head and rig u a slip bobber rig with a jig and one with a minnow find all the cover you can, sometimes now you will find a good group but usually no more than six or 8,when you pull in get bites quick and they slow leave for a few hours and come back.i prefer barren, nolin and rough, but green has good one in it they just don't get as shallow for extended time.good luck.bandit cranks in the black splatter 200's work good to if you slow roll them.

    RE: Crappie

I found the crappie in 70 deg shallow water last week before all the heavy rains. The were in brush that was in 7ft of water but close to 20ft depths. It was only about 30 ft from the shallow water to the deep waters. If that helps.

I fished deep drops that normally provide a limit of crappie but didn't' do that well in this spot. I think it will do better after the surface waters get into the 50 deg F range. I was surprised to find the crappie in shallower water but it makes sense now. Have not taken any deep water temp readings this year as I got lazy and didn't want to mess with the DO meter. But I have two surface temperature gauges on my boat that I make note of when I am fishing.

Crappie like ledges either in shallow water or deep.

Crappie will head into the bays in the fall probably following the shad schools. As it get colder they will head back to the main lake drops and spend the winter there.

You can catch crappie year round if you know their habits. Pick up a copy of "Crappie Wisdom". It's one of the In-Fisherman Series of fishing books. It's full of very useful information to any fisherman that is looking for crappie.

To catch crappie consistently you need to put out brush piles in good spots. Along points or around underwater humps. Or along the underwater creek channel bends or river bends in reservoirs. Put the brush in at the right depth and you can catch crappie year round.

Anyone that guides for crappie does this if they want to stay in business very long. It's a lot of hard work but it pays of.

Jigs and Jigs tipped with minnows works year round. I like to tip my jigs and my minnows with a chartreuse colored Berkley Crappie Nibble. The added scents helps catch more fish.

Many time when fishing deep (Below 15 ft) you may need to have a very sensitive rod and keep the line tight in order to feel the bite. When you feel the tap instantly raise the rod tip up a few inches. It won't take much to set the hook on a crappie but you must be quick. You need to set the hook while the bait is still inside the crappie's mouth. Having a long rod can also help you fish away from the boat or shoreline and that increases your odds of catching more fish.

Even better is a slip bobber setup with a small jig that can be casts away from the boat to catch those super sensitive slabs that spoke when a boat gets close. Casting out a jig and or minnow under a slip bobber is a winner technique in lakes that receive a lot of fishing pressure.
