How's the Crappie bite at Cedar Creek?

I'm bringing my boat with me to Lexinton for the holiday weekend and I'm hitting Cedar Creek on Saturday with my 81 yr. old dad, my 4 yr. old son and my 9 yr. old nephew. We're going to try to find some Crappie. How's the bite been lately? How about water temps??

    Thanks in advance,

    TI

RE: How's the Crappie bite at Cedar Creek?

The crappie in Cedar Creek are very small. I, along with a lot of others thought they would have grown to 9 inches by now. I caught several last month, but they were in the 7-8 inch range. It may take another year (or two) before they get big enough to go home with you. If it was me deciding right now I'd go to either Cumberland or Green river for crappie. For bass however, Cedar Creek is the ticket.

RE: How's the Crappie bite at Cedar Creek?

Early in the spring or summer of this year, I was catching crappie at Cedar Creek on basically every cast. Unfortunately, they weren't much bigger than minnows! ;)

The other guys are quite correct. Cedar Creek keeper size Crappie are hard to come by. But, if you just want a fun outing for the group, and are not concerned about "keeping" any .. then bring lots of minnows and fish the standing trees, in deep water. If, however, you would like to take a mess home, of eater sized Crappie ... then, depending on where you're "coming from" ... Taylorsville Lake may be a better choice. Try minnows at 10-15' deep, around standing trees (in deeper water) or over submerged brush, or the ends of blowdowns that stick out into 15-20+ feet of water. Water temps at T-ville are around 52deg, and the water is relatively clear. Water level is pretty much still at Summer Pool. ..... luck2ya ... cp

RE: How's the Crappie bite at Cedar Creek?

Thanks for the replies guys. You were right about the size and numbers at Cedar Creek. But, that worked just fine for my crew. Each of the kids caught 15 to 20 Crappie and so did my old man. They caught their Crappie on minnows under slip bobbers and I caught a whole bunch of those little squeakers on a jig. Red and white seemed to work the best. Not a single keeper out of the lot. A few pushed right up to 9 inches but didn't quite measure. We did catch quite a few bass as well and a couple of good-sized blue gills. Weather was awesome. There is nothing better than watching the kids catch fish. Fun day!

    Take care,

    TI
