RE: line twist on a spinning reel?

I've been using spinning reels for a long time. First, there is some high quality spinning reel out there that are designed to reduce line line twist (I don't own any personally but I've seen it and it's sweet). second, make sure that the line comes off of the spool in the exact way that it will lay on reel (the memory). When you put your boat in and are idling out of the no wake zone, cut the lure off and lay the rod tip in the water with the bail open. this will pull the line off of the reel. let out about 2/3rd's of the line then flip the bail over and let it go tight. slowly reel it back it in and the twist will work it's way out on the way in. when you're done fishing do the same thing and it will be ready to go the next time you fish. line conditioner ehlps with it some too. also never use the reel handle to flip the bail over when you cast, flip it over with your hand. that's how I handle it and it's a pain but it works.

I totaly agree with dpage. Another thing I use sometimes is a small swivel about 8 inches above the lure.

another tip that i have found out is watch when you drag is loose. like when your lure is stuck on the bottom stop reeling and pull the line with your hands or hold the spool so you have maximum tension on the line. it will help greatly with birds nests. also when the fish runs stop reeling. and if you are using braided line you really have to watch out...

I have always had trouble with spinning gear because of the line twist you mention. Many good suggestions here, especially using a swivel and a leader. One other thing is I have gone to BRAID for most of my spinning gear--it still twists but doesn't coil and rats-nest like you get with mono.

RE: line twist on a spinning reel?

Two products should help you eliminate or at least reduce the amount of line twist on your spinning reels.

1: The LineMinder from Bass Pro Shops.
    http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catal...=TOP_SEARCH_GO

2: Reel Magic - a can of silicon type spray that lubricated the fishing line and reduces the coiling and makes the line more limp and relax. You can find this stuff at your local Wal-mart in the sporting goods fishing area.

3: Check the line on the reel before Each and Every Cast. If you see a loop of line that didn't get wound on the reel's arbor and that loop is buried under some other line you should let all the line back out until you get to that loop. Then reel the line back onto the spinning reels arbor carefully while holding some tension on the line in front of the arbor. ie keep the line slightly tight as you reel the line back onto the spinning reel.

If you start to see a lot of loops then you have some line twist. To get rid of this you can cut the bait off the end of the line and then while moving in the boat slowly let out line until you get the twisted part way out behind the boat. Dragging the fishing line behind the boat to let the line straighten out. Now you can reel the line back in but hold onto the fishing line out in front of the reel while you wind the line back in and use just enough pressure on the line (hold line between your fingers)to keep the line tight on the reel's arbor as you wind the line back onto the spinning reel. This should get rid of the line twist.

You will never eliminate the line twist when using a open faced spinning reel completely. I fight with this problem all the time.

Well I will say this. I purchased a new Pflueger Trion reel last spring and put 2lb test Stren fishing line. Original type but it's blue tinted or something. But the point is this line is very limp and it casts better than any other line with my ultra light jigs. I can cast a 1/32 oz jig head with this light weight line. Now with that said I would not use this in heavy cover or want to tell you that you can land big fish with this small diameter line. You will loose some fish using 2lb test line unless you are very very careful and lucky.

I just wanted to illustrate that the fishing line makes a huge difference in how well one can cast. 2lb test line will cast much better than 50 lb test line that's has a thick diameter.

Also there are different types of mono. Each has different characteristis. Some mono has more memory than others. The size of the arbor that the new line comes on also makes a difference IMHO. If the line has memory it will coil more on a smaller diameter new fishing line arbor than on a larger one. ie the coils will be tighter and smaller in diameter. This is where REAL MAGIC spray can help some.

Bulk line arbors normally have a larger diameter. But I found that the larger diameter new line arbors were not working with my "LINEMINDER" device.

So, I had to transfer the new line from the larger spools to a smaller 100 yard spool, that I had saved from the past.

Most of the small open faced spinning reels that I have only hold about 90 yards of 6lb test line on them. So I use to buy the small spools of new fishing line.

I use to us a lot of the Trilene XL in 4lb test strength. And that line was sold in lengths of about 100 yards back in the past.

In fact the new Stren 2lb test line that I buy also comes on these smaller spools. I buy all the spools of the 2lb test line I can find at the local Wal-mart when they get a new shipment in. They normally only will have 4 or 6 spools of this stuff.

But, I have found that when I use this stuff on my new Pflueger Trion UL reel that it casts so much better and that I don't get the line twist that I once did with my other rods and reels.

BTW, I put this new reel on a St Croix 5.5' UL rod. This system is a dream to fish with and I have not touched my other ultra light rods and reels for the past 6 months hardly at all.

The are equipped with some cheap shakespeare UL opened faced spinning reels. These I picked up at Walmart for under 20 bucks. I have about 4 of these and I don't like them very much at all anymore for casting. I use them on my long Graphite crappie poles as simply line holders and I fish these outfits vertically. So I am only using the first 30f of the line on them. I still have to be careful to not get loops in them.

The one thing that I really can't stand is using a 12ft long jig pole from B'n'M and getting the line twist to make the line wrap around the very tip end of that long pole. I can't see that good anymore and I can't see the line at the end of the long pole to determine which way it's wrapped around the end of the pole. So I have to bring the rod tip back to me hand over hand to unwind the line from around the tip end of the pole. And usually by the time I get the rod back out into the fishing position the **** line is wrapped around the tip end again. When that happened about 5 or 6 times within 10 minutes you will hear me cursing all over the lake! LOL

Hope this long detailed post is of some help

Just remember the lineminder device and the low memory fishing line and the reel magic all will help reduce the amount of line twist but it will not eliminate it completely

If you don't have a lineminder you can still put the line on the reels arbor without a lot of line twist if you make sure that the fishing line is coming off the new line's arbor in the same direction as it's being put onto the reels arbor. Both should spin in the same direction. And keep some tension on the fishing line as you reel the line onto the reel.

RE: line twist on a spinning reel?

the coil up is in the line and how you put it on as said before.I use trilene xl and i have no problem at all and i have wal mart cheap
shimannos that are 10 years old and were 14 bucks.don't go too big in diameter or stiff stuff, don't fill it too full most do and it will fly off coil up,my partner did that last weekend took me ten mins to untangel him.when you put line on lay the spool down and only go through the big eye on the rod,not all of them.spool abot 20 turns if it looks like a coil spring flip the spool and go on,mark the spool if you want then next time you'll know which way it lays. One more thing is to not slip the drag turning the handle when you are hung up it will cause it too.

RE: line twist on a spinning reel?

very good info in the post above....one other point is try and put the grub, worm, etc., on the hook as straight as possible to prevent line twist as it sinks to the bottom..tight lines:-)

RE: line twist on a spinning reel?

I have found a way to put line on a spinning reel that almost elimanites any line twist. It takes a little more time to spool up a reel but the extra effort is worth it. I go outside into the garage and lay my reel on the work bench and open the bail. Grab the line and take off walking in a straight line across the yard. When I get to the end I stop and go back to the reel and cut the line off and throw away the old line. Tie the new line on to the reel and take off walking across the yard. Once you get to the spot where you stopped earlier take a few more steps to allow for some extra line. Then cut the line from the payoff spool. Go back to the reel and start reeling. You will see the line coming across the ground and the coils will be uncoiling. Sounds like alot of trouble but it only takes a couple of minutes to do this and the extra effort will save you time with line twist headaches.

As long as you are putting new line on the reel. I like to put it on then put a big loop in the end and put it on the hitch of my truck, open the bail and walk off waht you think the longest cast may be plus a tad more. Close the bail, put my hand on the spool and pull line tight and just hold it taught for a bit. You can get rid off memory off the spool this way. Works good for me . Good Luck :7
