This may be old news but I heard about this today for the first time from a boat dealer at the Louisville Boat Show . Starting this year you will have to purchase a license plate for your boat trailer in addition to your license for your boat. New boats will come with a title for the boat / motor and one for the trailer. Anybody else heard anything about this.

Hadn't heard about the license plate thing, but my Tracker (bought April'05) has a title for the boat/motor and a title for the trailer.
I have a title for my boat, motor, and trailer (1998) and never had to get a plate. I pay like 3.00 for taxes on the trailer but thats it.
I don't know about this year, but I have went ahead a purchased tags for my trailer for the past several years. Not worth the hassle of getting pulled over for while traveling in other states. Especially Ohio & New York. If you do not travel out of state, I would not worry with tags unless they have changed the law this year. I have a friend that works at the courthouse. I will have to give him a call and find out.

I talkedto the county clerk about this same thing, she told me we dont need platesfor our boat trailers in our county, and other states have to abide by Ky laws that pertain to trls. We needed plates when we had our travel trl though
If the state of KY does not require a licence plate and you go to another state that does, that state does not have to abide ky rules/laws. I think it is Alabama does not require you to have auto insurance when driving a car. If they come to KY and get pulled over they will get a ticket and it will hold up in court.![]()
sorry ur wrong zx. got pulled over in new york and they let me go. officer said it was or is called the pass through law. as long as you reside in the state your boat is reg. in
every time i go to fla i grt pulled over for no trailer tag and we go on our way.
i had heard they they were going to a one time tag and you just pay taxes every year.don't really know.
i work for vehicle enforcement and havent heard of any changes . in ky u dont have to license a trailer for private use unless it is a commercial vehicle.
