I'd love to tie into one of those on a rod and reel. I wonder if there's a way to target them and get them to bite. It would be like a freshwater version of a tarpon.

Peter, was this a record? I know in KY. the record was I think 52# I was close a little while back with a 53# that lost 2#s in my tank taking him home!!!Talkin smell>>.end result 51 and change anyway have you been over to chicks archery? they have a picture of a guy that I believe has the record in Ind. I was there to help with it caught at the upper dam @ mcalpine.I think around 60 # I can't remember....many fish ago.FISHGURL, about the only way to catch these critters is by snaggin which by the way just started FEB.1st and will go to May 10th in KY.I suggest behind a dam obeying the laws of the dam you chose...These records will be broken over and over because this fish is a glutten... endangering our supply of plankton to our young fingerlings.I believe it spawns three times a year ???I'll check..I've been told by DNR.and KY fish&wildlife to take them out...They do make good fertilizer. They are taking over our rivers and knockin jet skiers off there jet skies.... .... ...well there not all that bad huh!! I'm Just kidding..They are one heck of a fight and will jump out of the water...travel in schools and run over you if your in the water...fish with adittude .A matter a fact a good buddy of mine and senior member on this board caught 3 maybe400 hundred #'s a them and blues!!!!In a day... Can anyone guess who that member was? chuck..

I had the displeasure of having 2 jump in my boat last year. Was fishing the Plapp's Classic last year near Paducah. Scared the S**t out of me when one landed on the back deck. What a mess, slime on the carpet and the smell. The the next day had one jump and land on the floor. Was checked for a license by the DNR and they had 3 flopping on the floor of their jonboat. Talked to a few other fisherman and one was hit in the side of the face while idling. Great fishing near Paducah but scary that a fish that large can take you out... Dan

That fish actually weighed over 65# the night I shot it, but by the time I got it on official scales it was 62# 13oz. Bowfishing record is 64# even..We shot 12 over 50# that night andn who knows how many over 40 down below Cloverport by Cannelton Dam and the paper plant. Had a few nights similar to this last year between Wolf Creek and Levinworth. The sheer amount of these fish in the rivers now is so scary. We see them by the hundreds.
Shooting one of these mamoths can only be compared to deep sea fishing. They are SOOOOOO Strong. I use 808 Zebco and 4003 Synergy reels w/ 200# fast flight w/ a short 18" long rod extension. They will wear you out that's for sure.
The concentrations of Bigheads and Silver carp below Ky and Barkley dams has grown to such large concentrations the size of the fish get smaller each year. 6-7 years ago you could shoot 40-50# fish down there....now they are all ave. 25#, but 2 guys can shoot over 50 in a night. They are just stacked on top of one another. You always find the large fish on the outskirts of their populations. We're shooting big fish below Louisville now and I've seen them as far up as Markland Dam. I've heard of bigheads in Cinci.

The silvers are the jumpers and are scary! Ky and Barkley lakes are now having boaters being hit in the main lake areas...Soon we will be as bad as the Illinois river...check out this video.....this is what we see all over now....Scary!!!

You oughta hook one in the side or tail with bass equipment that would go over 40lb, and be wading waist deep with it in the same pool. Not for the faint at heart I can tell ya, the dang things are mean, and NEVER give up. You will get tired before they do, trust me, LOL.

I fish down there for other stuff and have been dreading the day they take over down below McAlpine. Are they there in huge numbers? When, what time of year and day, and where can they be seen. I would like to stay away from them is the reason I ask.

That's what I mean. They sound like a great sportfish if you can figure out how to get them to bite.

Peter....they are there, but we just don't see them in huge #'s up in the fossil bed area. I believe it has to do w/ the water depth. We don't see a ton of them during daylight hours as they are very light shy. You will find them lurking in the shadows of bridge pylons and the such, but I believe they stay in the deeper waters during daylight.
Sad to say, but it won't be long until they become stacked up below McCalpin like they are being found everywhere else now.
We normally shoot these fish in the middle of the river above the channels. If there is a scumline stirred up from barges.....they will be in it feeding on what was stirred up. You will find them anywhere the zoaplancton is. They eat all year long and can spawn duing high or low water conditions laying 1.3million eggs up to 3 times a year.

As far as I know there is no way of actually "fishing" for them as they are a filter feeder similar to paddlefish. Many are accedentally hooked in the mouth just because it's almost always open. They fight unbelievably dragging my 2070 Xpress all over the river! The silver carp are actually edible and actually very good during the early year. Super white, flakey meat...very tasty! Problem is cleaning them as they have a floating y bone, but there's so much meat to fool w/ who cares if you waste 5# of it.

Fishrgurl, as Chuck said they don't bite. They are strickly photoplancton, (spelling), eaters, they will not bite on anything. They should be completely eraticated and if it was somebody that introduced them to our waters they should be shot.
